RE: Four Mile Creek State Park Camping

Above posters are correct. When you register in, you get a window card. Your site fee covers your daily entrance. It also allows you to visit other NYS Parks during the active dates. Four Mile Creek is the closest to Niagara Falls. There are also several other State Parks along the south shore of Lake Ontario. Golden Hill is the next one east, followed by Lakeshore, and Hamlin Beach. Golden Hill hs water and electric at the site and has pull throughs that over look the lake.
At Four Mile, you will need to pull up to water spickets along the roads and fill your onboard tank. They do not have water on each site. Park is very nice though and worth the minor inconvenience.

RE: Pests

So much for people using this forum to obtain help for a problem. Three pages of responders and only two posts with any legitimate help suggestions! I take it those of you who flames the question have never had any kind of pest/ varmint problems in your RV's, all of the years you have owned and stored them! Yea for you!
To the individual who made this post and I do hope it was a legitimate issue, the best way to remove the problem is to trap the critter and either relocate it to a rural area, or permanently dispose of it. Shooing it away won't work. It has found a comfortable home, scented it, and it will return! You might also try contacting Pro Baass, or a local hunting supply company to see if they have any proven local solutions to your problem visitor.

brake calipers and rotors for a GM

I have an 06 3500 dually GMC, with the LBZ diesel. I'm interested in upgrading the brake rotors and calipers. Wondering if anyone has done this modification and which brand and model of rotors and calipers they used. If you've done the modification, did you have any problems with the anti-lock brake system?

RE: Tire Complaints

Mile High,
Thanks for the website. I do hope, as you do, people use it to post about trailer tire issues. We do a lot of complaining on this forum, but the complaints go pretty much to each other! The NHTSA will only act when there are MANY complaints over a short period of time, showing a pattern of failure/ death/ and injuries. Look how long it took to recall SUV tires, which were blowing out and rolling the vehicles over!
As for trailer tires, Goodyear sold the Marathon brand, molds and all to a company named Greenball. Any Marathon tires sold in the past couple of years are Chinese made!
The RV industry, is nortorious for bidding out tire contracts and taking the cheapest bid. There are so few regulations on the Industry as to minimum safety requirements and the general public who buy traielrs knows little about tire construction, or maintenance. How many take the time to have their trailer tires balanced? My bet is they expect the dealer to do this prior to delivery. Wrong assumption, most don't! Tires bouncing up and down from imbalance, cause hot spots and belt seperation leading to blowouts. At the least, significantly reduced tread life!
Are trailer tires speed rated? NO, other than the lowest possible rating, which barely exceeds to posted limit on most of our highway system. Speed, weight of the trailer, pressure build up from either over, or underinflated tires, imprrper balance, and driving in excess of the rated speed for the tires and the potential for tire failure increases dramaticlly.
Maybe I've been fortunate not to have a blowout yet. I have been towing for the past twenty five year and have been careful to make sure I take care of my tires. You can bet, however, I will reprot a tire failure be it foriegn, or domestic made, to the web site you posted, now that I know one exists!

park hosting response?

Hello,
I have been trying to get a response from Rainbow Springs State Park, in Florida, for the past three weeks. I was given the Camp Host Coordinators phone number and E mail address, to which I have called, and E mailed. To date, I have had no response from them. I was wondering if anyone else has had problems dealing with Florida Parks about Camp Hosting?
Also, can anyone tell me if the host sites at Silver River State Park are full hook up?
Thanks,

response from Florida State Parks

Hello,
I have tried two e-mails and one phone call to a contact person at a Florida State Park, about camp ground hosting for either next year, or the following year. As of this posting, I have not had either a return phone call, E mail, or read receipt.
Anyone else have problems with getting replies from them? The specific park in question is Rainbow Springs.

RE: Here we go again. Fuel prices

Has anyone noticed that as soon as the National Media starts talking about the ecconomy improving, the cost of all fuels go up! The large corporations, Oil suppliers and refiniers, along with most other mega corporations seem to be in bed with each other to manipulate both price and the ecconomies not only of the USA, but every other nation in the Global Ecconomy. It is absolutely true that it is price manipulation and it has gone on for so long, it is as though it is grand fathered in place.
The price of oil and all of byproducts affects all parts of our lives. Many people don't like price controls, but when greed powers those who control the ecconomy, there is little left for what can be done to control it. Like it or not, it is a form of financial slavery!

RE: turning an undermount kitchen sink around?

The faucets are mounted through the counter and the 60 - 40 sink is rectangular. Both bowls are the same depth, so there is little to no modification to the drain pipes, or faucet location. It is an under mount sink, plastic lined, to a Quartz counter top.

turning an undermount kitchen sink around?

My wife is unhappy with the way our sink is installed, in our 2011 Coachmen - North Ridge. The sink has the larger of the bowls on the left side, which placs it left of the place where she stands to use the sink! She is aksing me to look into cutting the sink loose from the counter, and turning it around 180 degree's. Just wondering if anyone else has tried doing this.

RE: hairline cracks in the frame... darn..

Hi,
You are correct! Any crack in metal will eventually tear further, if the area is under constant stress and movement. Being that the cracks are over the axles and around the shackle mounts, these areas arethe first point of entry to the vibration and jolts of the road.
I know this is not what you want to hear at this point, but in my honest opoinion, getting them fixed sooner is better than waiting for a catastrophic failure to occur. If your camper is still under warranty, start with your dealer and work up the chain. If necessary and likely it will be, contact your trailer manufacturer directly and possibly Lippert Manufacturing/ Frame Div. for assitance and if there are any recommendations on how the repairs should be done!
Good luck and please keep us up to date about how your repairs go.

RE: Anybody added electric dump valves?

My trailer is a 2011, with cable operated valves. The small grey tank valves work OK, but we have had nothing but trouble from the black tank vavle. I finally got a hold of a cable valve and wwas able to take it apart. Found two things right away. The lubricant used on the blade and seals, if not worked, such as during non-use, or storage, becomes very sticky. Also, there is not a drop of lubricant on in the cable sheath! Add the two together and it is impossible for the valve to open and close properly. I am having the valve replaced , for the third time this year, with the one that I have now worked on and lubricated. If this does not work, then it has to be the geometry of the cable and the bends it has to make to position the pull handle.
If all else fails, I plan to drill a hole through the web of the frame member and use a threaded tube extender to make a manual valve actuator!

RE: Fifth wheel design flaw

A couple of years ago, I had the overhang skin dropped, to check my pin box and framing for fatigue cracks. I noticedthat water had seped past the side wall to overhang seal and the Luan was wet. Also, the RV caulking between the front cap and sidewalls was loose in a couple of spots, even though I recaulk this seam frequently. My guess is, the caulk releases from the constant flex of the sidewalls and front cap, duer t the stress placed on that part of the camper by the pin box and framing.
I've also looked into making seals to go around the pin box, where it goes through the overhang skin. Sure seems to me like a lot of rain could blow into there while being towed through a storm!
Like old homes, RV's and trailers are giant holes in our wallets into which we pour a lot of time, energy, and money!

RE: Lubing axle bearings

hi,
I'm not sure why Dexter would have put the easy lube greasers onto your axles. That is a set up for non-brake boat traielrs. Like all liquids, of which grease is a family member, it will expand with heat. It also liquifies! Even if the seals have not failed, once you squirt in enough grease to fill the cavity between the bearings, when expeansion occurs, the residual will leak out past the seals and wet the brake shoes. Two worst case scenarios would be to loose all braking and need to make a panic stop, or having brakes on one side of the rig and jack knifing under heavy braking!
I agree with hand packing the bearings with a Marine grade axle bearing lube. Because trailers sit without use, sometimes for months on end, the water resistent grease will help to keepthe rolling parts from the effectrs of condensation, ( water ).
Take the bearing buddies off and get some o Ring sealed dust caps!

RE: Pilgrim Open Road delaminating?

2003 was the first year f production for Open Road. It was before the Company added Pilgrim to their name! No, the unit would not be a four season unit! The Arctic package, or heating pads on the holding tanks will give some protection if you are "caught" on the road in freezing temps, but I doubt you would be all that comfortable trying to camp for any length of time in cold weather.
I had a 2004 Open Road 357 RLDS. Bought new and traded last year, after major repairs. Main reasons for trade, First, the trailer was six yearrs old and had over 45K miles on it. Two, I did not trust the overall quality of the repair job done by the guy who "Re-skinned" the left side of the trailer. Yes, we had a major failure of a weld in the frame around the large slide out! Three, the company was out of business and the value of the trailer was falling like a stone! Figured if we were going to trade, we best do it before the trailer was like Kodak Stock!
Likely cause of delamination is water intrusion. It can also be caused by a failure of the bonding cement, due to heat from the sun.
As for the leak probablility, it most likely around the running lights and tail lights. Also could be around the window frames.
I agree with the other poster here. You don't need to start out with a money pit of an old trailer. Keep searching!

RE: Just returned from Hershey Show Lowdown on Lippert

Well, I've had several trailers from different manufacturers and they have all had Lippert frames! Some have taken the stress of use just fine and others ahve shown fatigue from use. Could be the individual trailer manufacturers specified the frames and minimized engineering, or they may have bought mass produced stock frames. Really, who cares? If the frames fail due to poor engineering and production quality, the frame manufacturer should be the one held to task. Sure seems to me that one of two things should be done. Either a large class action suit against Lippert, or The Federal Transportation Agency needs to update it's regs on what is safe to be built for our falling apart roads!
There is another part of this. Has anyone taken the time to notice how many other components in their rigs, or the ones they are looking at now have tags stating "A Division of Lippert Manufacturing"! It seems this Frame manufacturer is buying up many small producers of RV related components and becoming nothiong more than a Monopoly in the RV Industry. So, where is the competition? You want a frame by another company . Guess you had better go hire an engineer, a local steel supplier, and a welder, and build your own, as there won't be any opther frame manufacturer. They are all out of business! Oh wait, do I hear the sound of a Chinese Gong in the back ground. They are the only ones who have the cash and market to compete with Lippert!
Seriously, check out your furniture tag, Mattress tag, and other items. You'll surprise yourself at the name under the manufacturers name!

RE: Salem Mass.

Another suggestion! There are several RV parks in the Salisbury, Mass. area. A short drive south of Salisbury is the commuter rail station into Boston. They have a large parking lot and it is pretty inexpensive. Last time I parked there it was $2.00 for the day! The train is also reasonable. A lot less of a head ache than driving into salem and trying to find parking! The train station is a short walk from the sites in Salem. Also, if you want to see Boston, take the train in. The Boston station is within walking distance of Boston Commons and the tourist walikng history route. Again, a lot less headaches!
