RE: Best Roads to Michigan's UP from Ohio

NB US 23 had been repaved in the ugly section between 96 and 59 when we made our way home on July 25th. They may have some lines to paint etc, but the bulk of the work looked to be done. They just put a band aid on it with an overlay of asphalt and it will certainly be bad again in another year or two.

RE: Ocean Waves WiFi

When we were there last year, we were down at the end near the tent sites and had no wifi signal.
We had the same results in 2007. My BIL was picking up signals from the nearby rental houses.

RE: Michigan to Yellowstone route?

We did a loop on our Teton, Yellowstone, Black Hills trip. We left SE Michigan in the afternoon and stayed overnight at a Flying J near Davenport, IA. We normally would've left early in the morning and hit a campground as were not real big on overnighting in parking lots . From IA, we stopped in Kearney, NE at a small CG just north of I-80 and on the west side. It wasn't much of a campground but fine for an overnight stay, from there we stayed in Rawlins, WY, then to Colter Bay in the Tetons using HWY 287. Besides the winds the route wasn't bad at all.
From the Tetons we hit Yellowstone at Canyon Village entering the park through the south gate. We left Yellowstone and headed out the east gate to Cody for the night which was a nice stop with things to do for the kids. There's some good pulls through this area, but it's beautiful and worth it. From Cody we went over the Bighorns using Hwy 16, which was an interesting drive in my former underpowered TV, but it's a beautiful drive too. Wish we could've spent a night or two in the Bighorns. We made a stop in Gillette, WY before heading onto the Black Hills for a few nights.
We left the Hills and used I-90 and traveled through Chicago on one of the worst toll roads (can't recall what the # was maybe 294) I've ever been on. Maybe it's been repaired but I couldn't figure out were the $$$ was going. We made this pass very late on a Sunday night so traffic wasn't an issue. Otherwise I would've used a north/south interstate to get back to I-80 and avoid Chicago if at all possible. Then it's back to 94 and home.

RE: Yellowstone trip??

We enjoyed our stay at Canyon back in 2004 and if we return will stay in the park again. Canyon CG has flush toilets in the CG loops and showers and laundry available at the office. I know we were in Yellowstone for Father's Day and couldn't drive the Beartooth Hwy due to snow and clouds, but even with the occasional snow it wasn't bad weather wise.
Going to the Tetons and Yellowstone starting in the 2nd week of June worked out great for us and the massive traffic issues I had read about beforehand never materialized. The worse issues we had with traffic were the occasional Bison jam, majestic bull elk along the road jam, or the worse was the mama grizzly with cubs that were hanging out on the road from Norris to Mammoth.
We did make reservations during the late summer and fall of 2003 for our trip. We thought about making the trip include Glacier too, but with all there was to do in the Tetons and Yellowstone there was no time for Glacier. We spent nearly two weeks between the two parks before hitting Cody for a night and the Black Hills on our return trip home.
With all the trips we've done the kids still remember Yellowstone as there favorite.

RE: Wyoming Hwy 26 & 287

Been a few years, but that's the way we took into the Tetons and it worked well and I don't recall the pass being a big deal and I was in an underpowered TV at the time. The biggest issue we had was the wind was quite brisk during most of the drive, probably why it goes thru the Wind River Valley.

RE: Hocking Hills Ohio

Just curious, are timber rattlesnakes common around HH? They sound rather rare for Ohio and just on the edge of there known habitat, and was wondering if it could've been a Northern Water Snake, they look similar and the habitat is a perfect match for the Northern. Either way it's still a neat find from a safe distance, and I like seeing snakes from a distance.
The only reason I ask is that I've seen folks confuse water snakes with Massasauge rattlesnakes on more then one occasion, which is easy to do, except one has rattles and the other doesn't.
When we went to HH in 2007, the falls were a little dry in July, but it's a beautiful area. I just wish the state park had nicer bathrooms.
