RE: Bridgestone vs BF Goodrich

All of my experience with BF and Bridgstone are from having them on the cars.
I tried BF Goodrich one time and replaced the new tires within 10k miles with Michelin. The Goodrich we're real squirrely. We've had 3 CR-V's. The last two came from the factory with Bridgestone. I had to replace the bridgestones on both of them within 20K. They were starting to get squirrely, but not near as bad as thew BF's. I run Michelin exclusively on all of my vehicles.
Our first motor home was a 93 Winnebago. It had Michelin on the front and US made Coppers on the rear. We sold the Winny 5 years and 35K miles later and the Coopers were going strong. No checking or bulging and they were 15 years old!!! The purchaser drove the Winny to Toronto from San Jose and was going to replace all the tire with GoodYears Unfortunately he looked at a brand new 2008 Winnebago Adventurer and after that replacing the tires on the 93 was amoot point.
If the coopers were made in the USA (kind of sounds like a song doesn't it) I'd go with them. Otherwise, go with the Bridgestones.

RE: People from Santa Clarita, CA

Thanks to all of you for your replies. We made it to the Costco, but my navigator(wife) didn't notice that the Santa Clarita Costco does not have gas (although they're building one now). We lucked out and there was a Shell station near by. We checked with the Kohls next door and they had no issues with us parking there for a few hours. I wasn't too tired so we headed over the Grapevine and we're currently parked at the pilot across from Starbucks at exit 219.
Speaking of the "Grapevine", I-5 up or down the hill is not the "Grapevine". My father was a truck driver and I got to ride the real/original "Grapevine" with him a couple of times. This thing they call the grapevine today is a walk in the park compared to the Real Deal.
Having said that, this iteration of the "Grapevine" is so much more safe than versions one and two that I'd never want to have to drive anything other than this "walk in the park".
We're going catch a few winks and be out of here by 5:00 AM. We should be in San Jose by 10 no later than 11. (Rant coming)We did 550 miles since 2:30 this afternoon and it really impacted my DW's back once we hit I10 in greater LA. It's a disgrace to the Interstate Hiway system 9Rant over).
Again, thanks for all of the good and helpful replies.

People from Santa Clarita, CA

Having to make an emergency run from San Tan Valley, AZ to San Jose. We are stoping for gas at Costco in Santa Clarita. Does anyone know if Santa Clarita allows overnighting in big box parking lots?

RE: Need help finding the right repair facility in Phoenix

Another vote for Spectrac Suspension. They do something very different than what you might get at LaMesa, they deliver on time and on price.

Another vote for Scussett Beach. Plenty of room and very little traffic. Easy access to the canal bike trail. We've been ther at least three times and would go again if we are in the area.

RE: StormDamage

10k to cut up an oak tree? That must hVe been some oak!!!!
The high cost was because they used a crane to remove the fallen tree. The bulk of the cost is the use of the crane. If the tree service had sliced and diced the tree they could have removed it manually but it would have taken much longer and taken a lot more labor.
However I agree that 10K is a wee bit over the top.

RE: Whats the best & worse of Class A-ing & Gas vs Diesel ??

We don't have either of the units you mentioned. However, I feel that as the owner of a 35' gasser I can contribute. If you're looking at an Allegro, take a step up and look at an Allegro Bay. As far as the difference between a DP and a Gasser, if you want more room to play in you'll need a DP, or a gasser on a W24 chassis. We have not driven a DP because I don't want to suffer from DP envy. That said, our gasser does everything we need it to do. We tow a CRV and stay with the big boys on the hills. I must say that lately after 25K miles I'm starting to notice the noise from things that shake and rattle in the MH. The engine noise is not an issue. The engine fan noise could be an issue. I notice things that make noise due to a sprung suspension. If I could put an air ride suspension on this rig I would be happy under virtually every situation we've been in, and we've been on some really primitive roads. Because we're on a 22K chassis we can cross bridges in remote areas that a 36K-40K chassis should not be on.
Our gasser gets somewhere between 6.5 and 7.5 MPG regardless of the terrain we're driving on. Today, gas is cheaper. A good, well built gasser can be had for a lot less than a DP. However there are some smok'in good deals on DPs today. The problem is that the good deals are on 43' - 45' DPs, not what you're looking for.
We're on a semi-budget that does not have a new MH in the near future. Having said that, I'm perfectly satisfied with the gasser that we currently own (paid for). If our fortunes change I may look at a DP, but to be quite honest, I cannot justify spending the extra 100K for DP that is equivalent to our current lowly gasser.
You need to drive the top of the line gasser and drive its equivalent DP to be able to make an intelligent decision. Otherwise it’s an emotional decision and doesn't mean diddley.
Good luck in your endeavors.

RE: Workhorse Air Intake and rain

We have an 04 Mountain Aire on a W22 chassis and have had similar problems two times in torrential rain. The second time the engine check light came on. I drove another 200 miles to get through the storm and and to a camp ground. Let it sit for an hour and restarted the engine, no more check light. Based on the information posted here, I plan on calling Newmar and requesting the parts to perform the U/G.

Radial Cracks in a Hidden Hitch

This is not a rant, just an observation and suggestion that everyone make it a habit of checking your MH mounted hitch.
Last weekend I decided it was time I inspected my Hidden Hitch for cracks and loose bolts. Well, I was completely successful in my endeavor. I found two nuts out of four loose enough to turn using my fingers. The other two were wrench tight. I then started inspecting the welds. I discovered two radial cracks of about 45 degrees on the lower side of the tubing. Both cracks were of approximately the same length and location. The location of the cracks were where the tubing is welded to the brackets that attach to the frame or frame extension. The weld is on one side only and does not continue through the bracket. I sent an email to Hidden Hitch but so far have not received a response.
My concern is the lack of response from Hidden Hitch and the fact that the tubing was only welded on one side and not through the metal so that the bracket and the tubing were joined. I am not a certifed welder, but about 45 years ago I made my living welding and this would not have been acceptable. It could be that I'm over reacting, if so, I'll get over it.
My solution was to take the hitch to a certfied welder that I respect and have it welded properly by my standards (probably overkill, but what do I know). I reinstalled the bolts and torqued them to my specs (as tight as I could because I was unable to find the torque specs on the Hidden Hitch Installation Instructions on their web site). I then applied copious quantities of Locktite to ensure the nuts do not come loose again.
Just remember to check both hitches the one one the toad (towed, frog, etc.,) and the one on the Motor Home or Truck.

RE: Refrigerator Iceing Question

You probably have the same type of latch mechanism that I have. If you don't hear it click, it's not latched and you will get icing. You're also in a fairly high humidity part of the country which doesn't help. We had the same problem after traveling thru the Northeast and IN, WI, MN. I took a hair dryer to the fins and forced my wife to start listening for the click. No icing since. However, we've since moved from high humidity to no humidity. That may be the real reason we're not icing up.

RE: Home Base after Retirement

We had planned on having a home base in Brunswick ME. We even purchased property there. Unfortunately we had to sell it once we found out how high the property taxes are in Brunswick. We've been on the road since July and are now in the process of purchasing a new home base in Queen Creek AZ. We had not planned on buying now but when we witnessed the price of short sales here we felt that we had no other choice than to bite the bullet and purchase now. We decided on Queen Creek because it had ample property with lot sizes of a little over an acre and no HOA's. If you send me a PM I can give you additional info on short sale listings.
