RE: A few questions on Dualies

Just to stir the pot; Why not a class C instead of huge truck and TC? How many of you 450, 550 owners use your truck without your truck camper? I use the truck often without the camper. Class C has one use, besides massive annual depreciation . . . while TC is more flexible, reaches more places, takes up less room, can pull toys and provide a usable vehicle to and from campsite.

RE: A few questions on Dualies

The moral of the story ... is dually’s and or diesels are a want, not a need for the most part and for those "need" types hey cool, have fun out there but don't pretend there's only one option since there's decades of us in another camp who don't like dually's and diesels and we all get along just fine! :C BiGG can you help me on this one . . . who exactly NEEDS a DRW? I may be reading this wrong, however if I am understanding correctly it sounds like "if we've done it wrong for decades its fine to continue." I'm one of those kids who survived the 60/70's riding in the camper staring out the cabover window. Does that mean I should throw out everything learned about safety in four decades and leave well enough alone? This is starting to sound like someone trying to explain why the seatbelt is a "want" not a "need." While I understand there are plenty of campers made for SRW trucks, there are also many that are not. If you make the choice to exceed the GVWR of your truck I simply ask you don't try to justify it to others. If you make a conscious decision based on your belief of what's safe for you and your family . . . so be it. Just don't thump your chest at people who don't agree to take the same route. I don't tell others to go buy an F-550, its what I wanted/needed to feel secure with the load I carry. Please don't try and convince me that overloading ANY truck is cool because everyone's been doing it for decades.

RE: lance tank level sensors

The best black water sensor is a flashlight... shine the light down through the open commode valve... when its full its time to empty. It's the only level sensor that is trouble free. That’s if you don't mine looking at Brown Trout with Corn eyes and Lettuce fins. I don’t even like thinking about it. Now that's downright funny . . . just sayin.

RE: A few questions on Dualies

Just like Brian said, new diesels (08-newer) don't smoke or smell . . . period! Yes they are more expensive to purchase and my oil change costs a little more. However I get a very powerful power plant that provides consistent power at all altitudes, doesn't hunt gears stressing my trannie, better fuel mileage with a massive cooling system that will outlast any gasser. DRW? I have owned both, and won't go back to an SRW with a large camper. Each truck has its place, however the large heavy campers with slides really need to be on the DRW. DRW poor performer in snow, off road, sand? This is a common rumor spread by the SRW diehards. Most of my camping is done during the winter, in snow and ice, fire roads and on the sands of Pismo Beach. Driven in near blizzard conditions in the Owens Valley last year, been down steep icy rutted mud/dirt/rock Sierra roads and have yet to find anything to stop me other than tree branches creating a clearance issue for the tall Host on my back. Padlin asking an SRW owner what they think of a DRW is usually like asking Hillary Clinton to highlight the positives of Sarah Pallin. What I found in my original research when looking to change to the SRW is that most people making the same change never went back unless their needs changed. Again each truck has its benefits, you need to decide what your going to throw in the bed and then match a suitable truck. Happy camping!

RE: Need New 19.5 Tires

Mooney I have about 33000 miles on the truck. I bought the truck used and noticed that the tires were not all the same. At some point the previous owner changed the tires. I also noticed that on the drivers side rear inside tire, there is part of the tread missing. It could be a recap. Not sure but would like to start out freah and know what I have to work with. I only want to buy a complete set once and wanted to get the scoop here before the big purchase. Thanks for all the help. Mine came with two different sets of tires from the factory, the rears are Cont. HDR and the fronts have a less aggressive pattern, could this be the same difference on yours?

RE: Max Battery size in a Lance 1181

I fit group 31's in my 1181. It's tight, but they fit. Like the earlier poster stated . . . you CAN'T put a 6v battery as they are too high.

RE: Need New 19.5 Tires

Biggeek how many miles on the truck? I've got about 25k on my '08, but the tires show little signs of wear.

RE: New Product "Sumo Springs" from the maker of Super Springs

I've yet to see a bad product for Super Springs, they usually do their homework and release quality items. While I understand the skepticism I'll be curious to hear feedback from actual owners.

RE: Do you need cabover struts?

At this point I believe risk of damage to the camper from their use is an old wives tale. They simply dampen oscillation, using a long travel rod. I've had them on all of my campers until buying the F550 and really liked the improved ride.

RE: Mercedes TC

Jerry it was on the Central Coast for while. The inside looks horrible unless someone cleaned it up.

RE: Living out of a truck camper for the winter

Any advice? Tow a small cargo trailer for all your supplies. Purchase a large ASME propane tank. Get a dehumidifier. Have a great time!

RE: 2001 Lance 1161 NIGHTMARE!!!

Ok I have all my pics on my computer and cannot figure out how to put them in this forum. I continued tear off today, pulled stops off of slide and ran it into camper to gain more access to the support under the slide. If someone could give me a quick lesson on postin pics I would greatly appreciate it. You guys could all get a look at what im dealing with. Sorry for the double post, still trying to figure out the forum. I hadnt subscribed to the first post so it dissapeared on me. Paper . . . use any third party site that allows photo uploads, I use Photobucket. Then just copy the address of the location of the photo and post the link here. Thanks Bigg for looking out. I keep all registration to the company address . . . nothing points to home.

RE: 2001 Lance 1161 NIGHTMARE!!!

Paperclip . . . welcome to the forum. Sounds like you got an outstanding price . . . then found out why. Still sounds like a good deal given the rest of the camper is in good shape. Sleepy knows the 1161 well and has good contacts at Lance. If you get a chance post some photos, it may help others to make recommendations on the repairs.

RE: Truck Camper vs Truck + T.Trailer

Its like living in a one room house, ala the truck camper. If you prefer 2 or more rooms in your house, go with the TT. Plus you can have room for 4 or 6 people. I relate to truck campers as living in a telephone booth, as they are much smaller than any room in your average house. I believe the queen sized bed in my camper is the same size as your 5ver . . . amazing what they'll put in a phone booth these days. I think you'll find most of the TCer's don't enjoy the hassle of hauling a house behind their trucks. The modern camper provides all the ammenities found in most RV's while enabling access to parking lots, all gas stations, any camping spot that fits one vehicle and back roads and camping areas that others only dream of. If your one who pulls up to campsite and likes to hibernate inside, the TC wouldn't be your first choice, in my opinion it would be your home with an HD TV of the outdoors.

RE: Truck Camper vs Truck + T.Trailer

We had a Lance camper and then went to a Bigfoot trailer, which I always thought would be my ideal camping vehicle. While we loved the Bigfoot, we found we didn't like traveling with the trailer. We tend to be more travelers than campers and the trailer limited where we could go. We went back to a Lance and couldn't be happier. It really does depend on how you like to travel and what works best for you. Ditto.
