RE: Satellite Internet- do you use it?

... and if either of you are a veteran , you can save 15% on the Mifi and the service members cell phone too.
Do you save on the MiFi's data plan too? I checked with some less-than-knowledgeable Verizon people and they said (after reading it somewhere, they must not get the request much) it only applied to phone plans of at least $39.95 or better (ours is $10 less than that so getting the discount would cost me $5/mo). They didn't read it as applying to data plans.
They also said I'd have to put the plan into my name.

RE: Satellite Internet- do you use it?

Since we are on the 5GB plan with the Verizon MIFI, and because "unlimited" was no longer an option when we got it, I've been monitoring our usage and have found that we never exceed the 5GB and rarely go over 2 1/2GB in a month. There have been times where we've had 4 computers on it doing "required" training courses and still not even got close to the limit. It's been half a year and I find 5GB more than adequate but...
...I don't d/l HD movies, which I understand can use a huge part of the limit (I heard two HD movies will about use up 5GB but I don't know that for sure).
We are only 3G in our area but we were in a 4G area for a recent weekend. WOW!! "Ten times faster?"... at least!! Lightning fast! (I even watched the Kony 2012 movie with no buffering). We're s'posed to be 4G later this year but even this 3G isn't bad.

We've had Verizon for years but I never knew that. Dunno what I gotta do (show my lifetime USSVI card? give them a copy of my DD214?) but I'll check next week when I'm near our local store.
Thanks!!

RE: Satellite Internet- do you use it?

We were on s-l-o-w dialup (26.4Kbs) for a couple of decades. I'd recently looked at sat internet and local microwave. I hadn't seen ANY good reviews of sat service, and the microwave was ready to dispatch someone to our home so I could learn which big trees I'd have to remove to get reception.
Then I found out about Verizon's Hotspot service. It's $50/month ($10 less than microwave, also less than satellite). We only have 3G (they say 4G is coming this spring) but even that is WONDERFUL!! After dialup, it's lightening fast. We have DSL at our office, and the hotspot is almost as good. We spent last weekend in a 4G area and it was ten times faster than our 3G.
Microwave isn't "portable", it'd only work at our home. Satellite IS portable, if you consider setting up and aiming the dish.
This hotspot is portable, the size of a credit card only thicker, and works anywhere Verizon has cell service... obviously slow when 3G isn't even available. It saved us from paying $12/day to the hotel last weekend for internet access.
We haven't yet taken it camping but know the service is available at our favorite spots because DW's smartphone worked.

RE: Interesting Story About The History Of Inverters

Thanks mexbungalows. I'm VERY familiar with all those brands and, though I've communicated with Robin a few times over the years I never had seen "the rest of the story".
I had a 2KW Heart Interface inverter powering our home 24/7 for about 20 years with no problems. I replaced it a few years ago when I moved from propane refrigeration to electric, and the MSW inverters are hard on motors so I installed a Magnum inverter.
We still have the Heart, just sitting in the garage, because the thing weighs 82# so it can't be easily shipped.
I also have a 2.5KW Trace inverter that powers my well and pressure pump.
And I use three Outback charge controllers.
So thanks again for your post!

RE: Time to upgrade the audio

I see no problems with your plan. I replaced the "stock" RV unit with a quality auto one many years ago, wired some bookshelf speakers in, and have been enjoying it since.
I also wired the existing ceiling mounted RV speakers to the fade control (for the "rear" speakers), combined them in pairs (they were 4 ohms and the receiver specified 8 ohm) and they have worked just fine too.

RE: Inspecting trailer brakes

I think it unlikely you'd find them "stubborn to move". Trailer brakes rarely have self-adjusters and even if they did, they would have to be malfunctioning to cause the wheels to be hard to turn.
Likely you'll find them easy to turn because they need adjusting. I won't detail adjustment instructions since they are easy enough to find.
The best inspection is to remove the wheels, remove the hubs, clean and regrease the bearings, replace the seals, adjust the brakes, reinstall the wheels. Also the wires and magnets need to be inspected during this work.
On an '09, I'd simply readjust the brakes but others may disagree.

RE: Microwave Oven Interior

I guess I'm missing something here. Why would you want to repair this thing?
Our first microwave was an Amana Radarange we bought in late 1971. It had two dials: time and power. We have had MANY others in the decades since. I've NEVER seen even the tiniest interior paint 'bubble' or 'flake' in any of them.
I've never even heard of the interior paint acting like yours! Obviously a defective product. What happens to the miniscule paint parts when they fall off? Do they fall into your food?
I would never consider repairing it. There were some good suggestions for replacement from the previous posts and that'd be my recommendation even if it meant some cabinet modifications.
"Paint bubbling" from heavy use?!? Dang, what do you do? Run that thing 10 hours a day? Every day of the week? How could "heavy" use could cause the problem you have? Or are you microwaving turpentine or gasoline?!?
Not surprising to me it's not made anymore... that plant in China was probably shut down for using substandard materials (which, I believe, in China would have to be pretty severe to warrant adverse action). Samsung, like most manufacturers, just contract and buy the best price they can for their specifications.
Again, maybe I'm missing something here.

RE: Verizon Home Connect....First Impression

Thanks, Dick
A month ago I got Verizon's 4G Hotspot and for the first time since the internet began, we are not dialing in at 26.4kbs! Even tho we still have only 3G for a few more months, it's still almost as fast as our office DSL.
During a couple of visits getting the Hotspot set up, I'd been looking at the Home Connect since our landline seems to mostly be there for telemarketers. Glad to hear it works as described.
Is caller ID included? And, if so, do you think it'd work on our Dish receiver? With CID displayed on the TV, at least I don't answer those telemarketing calls and would not want to give that up.

RE: WiFi Extender - Daily Deal Today Only

I'm not affiliated in any way with the site, but I check it daily and have ordered at least a half-dozen items over the past few years without problems.
Shipping notification is "lacking"... sometimes none, sometimes coming after an item is already delivered.
But the prices are great and the quality has been as expected, which is obviously dependent on the particular product.

RE: How to know how much "stuff" you have in the MH

Like the posters before me, we had too much 'stuff'. We'd bought a new fiver, and transferred all the things from our old one to our new one, without regard.
After realizing we were now "heavy", I took the rig to a scale.
Next step was to reduce weight. Started pulling stuff out of the RV that we had not used in years, if ever. Only put back the things we would use at least once per season.
So I fully understand your 'revelation' but only wonder what you'll do without another RV to put the stuff in?

RE: Headphones for traveling?

I have an older set of Bose noise-cancelling headphones (not ear-buds). I use them on my tractor and when I'm using my wood-splitter. It's not that you CAN'T hear the engine drone, the noise is just very much reduced and I don't hear it over the music from my MP3.

Will Sara ever post back the solution that worked, for the benefit of others?
Had her register date been the same as her post, I'd have guessed "no". But since she'd been a member longer I'd hoped "yes".

RE: How many miles on your ford 7.3

2000 F-350. 195,000 miles. Replaced a water pump and new brake pads. Taking it to Alaska next year. Don't even bother asking me if I might want to trade for something else.
YOU are part of the problem I had trying to find a decent 7.3L! I searched for a year until I found one. Owners that know what they have won't let go!

RE: How many miles on your ford 7.3

Just about broke in at 147,000! Last year available in my 2003 F450.
Like Artemus, I bought a 7.3L as new as I could find... the last quarter they were installed in Fords (1st quarter of the 2003 build year).
Only 110,000 miles so far (of course, I bought it with 100K almost 4 years ago). I am hoping it lasts a long time and doing all I can to help (don't drive it much, all synthetic fluids, keep it on a battery charger).

We've used a 12V pad for many years and just put it across the bottom of the bed. Having our feet and legs warm seems to make the rest of our bodies warm.

RE: Help! Toilet backed up/clogged!

It's possible that the rod you pull to open the valve has pulled out of the gate valve. If you can access the valve to see, it's easier. When it happened to me, the actual valve was covered by the underbelly panels so it was a job just to get to the valve. Once there, I could guide the rod back in, and reseat it.
Of course, it it happened once it can happen again. I installed a tiny hose clamp on the rod that prevents it from being pulled out too far again.

RE: Brief review of the Kindle Fire

For members at SatelliteGuys.us forums (must have posted at least 5 times) they are raffling off a Kindle Fire. You are limited to 100 entries, and can't enter more often than once per hour. The drawing will be held Nov 30th.
They just finished raffling a Kindle 3G today (I've been entering for the week this raffle has been on).
Details are here: SatelliteGuys current raffle
That page will only be good until this raffle is drawn.
If you've never been there, their forums are EXCELLENT for all things satellite, whether you have Dish, Direct or the old big dishes.

Wires for a solar panel were installed by Komfort behind the fridge. Then if you want to install a panel, you just gotta remove the fridge roof vent and the wires are already there.
