Insurance for travel trailer

I am interested in finding out how you all insure your trailers. My insurance agent is charging a lot for a stand alone policy on my Jayco. Supposedly I could attach a rider on my truck policy that would cover the trailer when we are towing. However, we store our trailer in a storage lot and I want it insured all the time. I remember that my car insurance company wanted to charge a huge amount to cover my motorhome, when I had it and assume there are companies out there that specialized in RV's that would be more reasonable.

RE: Extended Warranties

When we bought our used motorhome, they offered us an extended warranty. I never buy these things but this time I did. The second summer we had an engine failure. (it appears the previous owner wasn't real big on maint.) While they did cover the installation of a new engine, it wasn't easy. They dragged their feet for weeks and finally between pressure from the dealer I bought it from and me threatening to get a lawyer, they gave the ok to the dealer to replace it. They even tried to claim that the dealer made a mistake and I wasn't supposed to be offered the policy. They offered to refund the purchase price of the policy. The government is investigating several of these "extended warr." companies, for false advertising, and failure to pay claims. Remember that these contracts are not from the mfg. They are companies that are in business to make a profit. If you buy a policy for $2K and they pay out $3K in claims, they won't be in business very long. JMHO.. Pat

Progressive Dynamics Converters... What's the Difference

I considering replacing my stock converter/charger with a PD9145. I checking the website and find they have a PD9245 and a PD9145' I had a PD9160 w/Charge Wizard in my previous RV, but to charge the 2 golf cart batteries in my trailer, I feel the 45 amp charger will be perfect. I confused as to the difference between the 9100 and 9200 series units....They offer no side by side comparison of the features....so what's the difference between them?. The price seems to be very close, between them?...

RE: Jayco X19H or Rockwood Roo 19?

Interesting about all the recommendations for Burlington RV. We went there, a while back to look at some Class A motorhomes. Not the high ends ones. Just some entry to mid level gassers. When we walked in the door we were handed a sheet and were told to fill it out. I started answering the questions until I got to the ones requesting my current salary, time on the job, down payment method, etc. and stopped. I was told that unless I gave them the information, I would not be allowed to look at any RV's. We walked out. I understand that time is money, and didn't want to waste anyone's time, but I was interested in looking a several different models. The idea that we were going to be prejudged as we walked in was irratating. We wound up buying a pre owned unit from another dealer. I think they must have stopped this practice, as I cannot believe a dealer would survive with that type of attitude towards it's customers

RE: 2008 Sienna and Hybrid Trailer

Minivans do not make good tow vehicles.....While the engines may make sufficient HP, the transmissions are not up to the task. No amount of transmission cooler is going to change that. They are designed and engineered for mpg. I know a few that have done it. They even cut the service intervals in half. Still most have suffered transmission failures. I did know one guy who towed a Trail lite 21 with a Ford Winstar. He towed it for a few years, but it was a 3.8 liter and he did all his shifting manually. He also had a transmission cooler that looked like a second radiator. He also said that 55mph was top speed without overheating and never use the A/C unless you were willing to drive 40 mph. Most mini SUV's and crossovers are nothing more than cars that look like trucks. That being said, they are no better, for towing, than the car platforms they are built on. JMHO.....Pat

RE: roof repair

Use whatever you want to cover the hole. Just make sure it is sturdy enough to support a little weight. Clean the roof area well and then cover the whole area with Eternabond. The stuff works well and if applied properly will outlast the existing roof.

RE: roof top a/c

Finding an HVAC guy to mess with one will be a challenge. On the one in our previous MH, we found the wire that came from the compressor came off at the terminal strip. The fan would run but the compressor would never kick on.

Not sure about the OP's A/C but the Coleman units I had in my MH had 12 volt fans.

RE: Generator Options for Jayco 23B

I have an ETQ 2500i inverter genset I purchased from Wise Equipment Sales. It is reasonably quiet and has the idle down feature when the loads are minimal. It does everything but run my 13.5K A/C unit. (It may do that with a hard starting kit on the A/C, but I haven't gotten around to that, yet) It is compact and at half the price of a Honda EU2000 it serves my purposes, just fine. I will probably be upgrading the factory installed charger to a Progressive Dynamics PD9145 at some time as the stock one is pathetic when it comes to charging a couple of GC2 six volt golf cart batteries. I am also considering upgrading from my current 300 watt inverter to a 1500 watt MSW unit. While the 300 watt unit easily powers the TV and Sat RX, it is rather limited. I have no intention of trying to run the a/c or microwave from the inverter, but with the golf cart batteries, I would easily be able to power up the coffee maker for those rest area stops. (takes less than 10 minutes to brew a pot)

RE: Benefits of HD gas shocks

Thanks to all. I really wasn't looking to increase the load capabilities of my Ranger. With my current trailer I am 2500 lbs below my Gross combined. What I was looking for was to get better ride quality. On a recent trip to Wisconsin, I found that my rig didn't like the concrete roads, up there. On blacktop it road well, but on the concrete it seemed to get in sync with the joints. With each passing joint it seemed to bounce more. It got very annoying. Then if I hit a bump or a repaired spot, it would stop, Only to start up again an a couple hundred of yards. I can live with the bumps....but it was like bouncing on a trampoline.....I'm hoping new HD shocks can dampen this

RE: Winterizing, Sumerizing?, and chlorination?

as far as winterizing the water system, I installed one of those winterizing kits at the water pump. Winterizing consists of draining the holding tanks, draining the water heater, switching the water heater bypass valve, sticking the hose from the winterizing kit in a jug of RV antifreeze and switching on the pump. Then I go to each faucet, toilet, shower, and turn them on until the pink stuff comes out. This also winterizes the drains at the same time. Then I switch off the pump and open all the low point drains and leave them open. I did this with our first trailer, our class A motorhome, and now with our hybrid. In almost 20 years of Illinois winters I've never had damage from freeze up....It works for me. By the way.. In case you just happen to have a jug of RV antifreeze laying around in the winter and notice that it freezes solid. DON'T WORRY!! IT'S NORMAL!!... Non toxic RV antifreeze will freeze at very low temperatures. It's protection comes from the fact that it does not expand when it freezes, therefore no cracked plumbing. (The first time I noticed this I panicked and tried to thaw everything out when it was -10 degrees.. It was like watching an old Keystone Cops film.....LOL)

RE: Winterizing, Sumerizing?, and chlorination?

Over the years I've done everything to try and make the water from our tanks drinkable. I'm pretty picky and won't drink water if it has any taste other than water. The chlorine thing works best. For that I found pool chlorine worked the best as bleach always seemed to leave a soapy taste for a long time. I also tried numerous filters etc. The cartridge filters worked the first time you used them, but leaving them sit for a few weeks made me nervous about bacteria growing in them. If you filter crud out of the water, then you leave it in the filter for a few weeks, packed away in a nice warm dark camper, it become the perfect home for bacteria and parasite to grow. So, finally, I gave up... water in the tanks is for washing or flushing. Water for consumption is purchased at the store and is replenished each trip. Even the dogs get bottled water. It's how I solved the problem of quality water and it works for us.....
