Best winter month to visit Disney World/Epcot?

I have not researched this yet to look for weather data. I thought I'd ask, anecdotally, for what month I should go to Epcot. I'm from the midwest and have never traveled to the south during the winter. I'd like to camp and spend a week or two in Orlando area, but don't know which month (Jan, Feb, March) would be 'best', weather-wise.

RE: Ken Burns Special "National Parks"

His stuff is long so I always record it. I'll watch it over several weeks. I'm a really big fan and supporter of national parks.

RE: Washington DC for Spring Break - recommendations needed

We're partial to Lake Fairfax County Park in Virginia. You will have to drive about 25 minutes to get to the Metro. This may not do you as the hookups are only electrical. But, if you are willing to handle water yourselves, this was pretty nice area. http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/campgrounds.htm

Moraine Park CG in RMNP

For anyone who has stayed in this campground in the Rockies, can you please tell me approximately how long it took to get into Estes Park? Same question for Glacier Basin. Just trying to figure out how long it takes to get into town to get groceries and whatnot. Mileage doesn't mean anything in mountain parks. Also, does anyone know if they do campground programs in the evening, or is that another long-gone activity due to budget cuts (we're talking Summer, not this fall)? Thanks a lot.

RE: Philosophical question, Why do you PUP?

We've been tent camping and hiking for 30 years. We early retired, and the least expensive way to camp extensively was to get a PUP (also, easier to tow, can see over the top of it). We take month-long trips to areas such as the Canadian Rockies, Tetons, Smokies where 'regular' accomodations are far too expensive to stay in for weeks at a time. Camping allows us to stay as long as we wish. But, we too, aspire to a TT eventually. Same reason as many --- want a 'normal' bathroom inside. Otherwise, like the PUP. Anecdotally, the people that like the PUPs are ex-tent campers.

RE: Some questions as I prepare to by my first ever Pop Up

Others have answered questions. Just suggesting, as a 1206 owner, to consider the 1206 with slide-out. Gives you a bunch more room.

RE: Any 'new' species' in North America 'waiting to be found' ?

Wonder what 'new' species exist in North America...that haven't been 'discovered' yet by science ?. A happy wife????:E

RE: What do you do in the winter with the batteries?

You take them out and put them in a garage or some area out of the elements. You can either get something like a 'battery minder' that stays plugged in and constantly keeps a charge on the battery, or you can simply use a standard battery charger and go out once a month, hook it up, and charge the batteries. Of course, you need to remind yourself of that in some way. Your batteries will keep perfectly fine if charged every 4 weeks.

RE: What's the deal with these campground memberships?

It MAY be worth it to you if you really want to spend a lot of time at one of the CG's, or more than one, giving you the deal. But, I'm like a lot of people --- want to travel and I prefer staying in state and national parks rather than private cg's anyway. But, it may work for you. You're the only one who knows what you want in the way of camping, and where.

Eternabond prep work and application

As suggested, I'm going to seal my PUP roof with Eternabond (the seam all the way around). Can someone point me to info on how to prep and apply the tape? For instance, do I need to try to remove all the old caulk and strip the wax that I just applied last month (at least, where the tape would go)? Thanks.

RE: Headed for Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks

Another vote for Gros Ventre if you don't need hookups. Easy access to trailheads in the park and easy access to Jackson, but far enough to feel like 'wilderness'.

Warped/Wet Board in Roof

The last camping trip, I was overrun by carpenter ants. When getting ready to go home, and popping down, I found that the ants were nesting under the lip at the front (bunk end) of one side of the pup. I never paid attention, but the roof has a board under the aluminum which I assume is one of the trusses for the roof. Anyway, I'm able to close the pup, but the front of the roof is 'wavy'. I can treat the wood with a wood hardener that binds up wet wood. I can't fix the warping, but as I said, I can pop up/down ok. But, I assume (?) that to keep water out of there I need to caulk at least the front of the roof? Anyone else had this problem? Recommendations? Thanks.

RE: Pup Table Replacement / Mod

I posted several years ago after I got my (then) new PUP that I really disliked the table. Very heavy and difficult to set up largely because of weight. I simply built a new one, of same size, out of tongue and groove wood siding (the thin stuff over 1 by's. However, I used the same type of legs/bracket that you seem to object to.

RE: Anti Sway Paranoia

Purely anecdotal answer. We've had absolutely no sway while towing our Jayco 1206 (see my sig). I have towed on several trips at 65-70 mph, for 8 hours a day, 3 days in a row going up/back to Canadian Rockies, Tetons, Smokies, etc. I have an issue with a bit too much tongue weight, but never have felt any sway.

RE: mildew on canvas

This is asked all the time and the best answer is to check with the manufacturer. The absolute 'no no' is bleach --- it will permanently damage the waterproofing so it's out of the question. I've seen postings for hydrogen peroxide solutions, Simple Green (or similar), and rubbing alcohol. Your manual will probably have a suggestion. The manufacturers use different materials for their pups and not all chemicals can be used on all fabrics without damage.

RE: So who uses this?

We have a ProRac model that locks around the square hitch tube --- the original, nothing changed. We only have 2 bikes (not sure if it would work for more) and we're able to put the bikes on and clear the battery box on the PUP when we're hooked up, no problem. http://www.prorac.com/ballmount.php

RE: Mickey Mouse doors!

I have a 1206 and those little 'tabs' are a bear to deal with (I have to resort to taking a pliers to turn them). But, they do hold the door in place along with the plastic 'whatever they are holders' that secure the door to the frame.

RE: Recommendations on a RV park near Grand Tetons

Gros Ventre is our favorite spot in the Tetons to stay. Loop A puts you walking distance to the river and some cutthroat trout fishing. There is also a great chance at seeing wildlife there, have seen moose, deer, antelope, and bison there. It was recommended to us a few years back, we gave it a try and now it is our spot to stay in the Tetons.... 2nd that. The bathrooms there are not the greatest (built in the 60's and not updated). But, the location is ideal. Very close to the park and various trailheads, but far enough off the main drag to not hear any traffic. Yes, animals everywhere and the river next door. Also, close enough (sbout 20 minutes) out of Jackson should you want to do the 'tourist thing'.

RE: Make sense to buy US Mint silver coins ?

If you're worried about food and gas, you're better off stocking up on 'survival food' (as apparently, a great many people are). If you're able to get water, you can store a years worth of dried food in a small space. You can also build an underground tank to get gas out of. You think the gas station attendent is going to give you change from a silver coin? As far as I'm concerned, if there were a real collapse, such as you see in science fiction films, there would be nothing to purchase. Mobs and individuals would simply steal everything in sight. Your life wouldn't be worth anything.
