Black Hills S. Dakota BLM/Dry camping sites

Working my way across the North in a couple of weeks - wonder if there are any boondocking or dry camping site areas around the Black Hills or, barring that, Rapid City, South Dakota.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

RE: Heartland Bighorn

I'm sitting in bed in my four week old 3670RL down in Yuma in the Imperial Dam LTVA. Minor issues, but so far, so good. Love the layout. Love being able to stand up in the bedroom (I'm 6'2".) Love the separated off bathroom. Insanely in love with the kitchen.

RE: Kayaks and 5th Wheel, any ideas?

I had the same question with my cabover camper - bought a folding kayak (Folbot). It tracks well, paddles easily, but is a bit of a chore to fold and unfold. I'm getting better at it...
Now that I have the fiver, it's easy to toss it into the bay.
I haven't gotten good reports on how trackable inflatables are - probably depends on the make and design.

RE: Currently RVing through Mexico - Let us know if you have questions

True enough.
In the past, after a meal has been the traditional time for a cigarette & it was pretty common to see someone lighting up after lunch or dinner. It's less so, now.
In Italy, though, we were at a little restaurant in a tiny town in Tuscany, with signs all over that stated smoking not allowed. A late group at a table a couple of (empty) tables away finished their meal and a two or three people lit up, anyway.
No one did or said anything about it.

RE: Currently RVing through Mexico - Let us know if you have questions

The smoking reference actually came from the wife of an otherwise dear friend who exclaimed indignantly that she'd never go to Europe because they smoked, there.
Can't say much to that, other than, 'Hmmm. Indeed.'
Actually, there is much less smoking in Europe, these days - no smoking zones are getting established in restaurants - even in Italy!!
Explaining all of this fell on deaf ears, of course - she was just determined that if she even saw a cigarette, that would kill the trip for her.
'Hmmm. Indeed.'

RE: Currently RVing through Mexico - Let us know if you have questions

But people tend to look thu rose colored glasses and don't like to report or say anything that could be unfavorable. Fact is not everything in Mexico is enjoyable.
This is an interesting point of view. For as long as I have been aware of the country, I have never read anything favorable about Mexico in the mainstream media. I have never seen a Hollywood movie on Mexico that was not about drugs and crime. If people here choose to say good things about the country it is because it is a great country. People here have discovered that and someone needs to say it. If you want the negative, pick up any newspaper or just hang around this forum long enough and you will read plenty from the nay-sayers. I don't think that pointing out the positive aspects of the country is pollyana. I think it is desperately needed balance.
No, no, no!! It's a terrible place!! Everybody stay home!! You'll be much happier there.
Believe all the terrible things you hear about Mexico, or any other country that might be different from the US. Remember, they might smoke, there!!
I have enough trouble elbowing aside all the Canadians (who know better), as it is.
So, do stay home. Much safer. Much neater.
Watch TV. It's good for you.

RE: New 5th wheel owner makes stupid mistake

New Bighorn 3670RL. I popped the release arm and the trailer slid right off the hitch, slick as can be, and started rolling away. Fortunately, the front legs were down far enough to catch it and the incline was very light. Otherwise...
Now, it's chocks in first and out last, no matter what.
Have to echo the thanks to everyone posting their mishaps. My heart stops when I read them, and makes me extra vigilant - until I pull a boner like this...

RE: Currently RVing through Mexico - Let us know if you have questions

Hey, Kevin -
Good to hear from you, again.
Even though we haven't yet had a chance to cross paths I feel I know you and Jeanne through your correspondence since what? 4 winters ago, now? Funny how time trudges on...
I'm hanging out in Quartzsite this winter with a new fiver and a lot of work on an old truck, so Mexico is not in the picture, this year. Once I get everything shaken out and schedule permits, I still have Paa Mul as a targeted destination, at some point (at some point...)
Until then, glad to hear things are working out, for you. I'll continue to look for your posts/blog and forward them to my SO, wishing you the best.
Take care,

RE: Feliz Navidad from Mazatlan!!!

Awesome. I spent a good part of the winter there a couple of years ago.
What park are you in, and is there room for more?
Cheers and feliz,

RE: gooseneck + adapter + Bighorn 3670RL (12K dry)

All interesting - it is a point that all the fiver manufacturers fabricate to the fiver plate setup.
For me, right now, I've got a brand new unit and I'm not interested in doing anything that would mess up the warranty. I got a turnover-ball/companion setup. Maybe when the unit gets out of warranty, I'll play with a GN adapter and see how it compares. In the interim, this is the setup.

RE: gooseneck + adapter + Bighorn 3670RL (12K dry)

Well, thanks all for the discussion.
I wound up having the ball removed and putting in the B&W setup (my wallet says, "ouch!") Mechanic recommended it highly. Being ignorant in the matter, I have to trust his expertise.

RE: gooseneck + adapter + Bighorn 3670RL (12K dry)

Actually, I've been talking to the folks at the Heartland Owners forum and ultimately the warranty is the issue (which does have implications for structural strain.)
Thanks.

gooseneck + adapter + Bighorn 3670RL (12K dry)

Hi, all -
So, I've got a truck with a killer gooseneck setup installed in it, already. Looking to get the Bighorn 3670RL (which is a moderately heavy trailer - 12K dry).
I can get that all cut out and replaced with a plate, but I'm wondering if a gooseneck adapater would work?
Gooseneck ratings are pretty high - towing horses, vehicle carriers, etc. I'm thinking a concern would be the shock transmitted to the trailer? The truck's got a pretty stiff suspension (air-bags added). Is there an adapter with a suspension mechanism in it?
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm a real newbie in the fiver world, so any help appreciated. I'd like to really understand the issues before spending a couple of grand to get it cut out and replaced with a plate.
thanx,
rickb
