I have a 96 Sea breeze with a 454 & a 4l80-e trans on p30 chassis. I bought the MN 31/2 years ago & on the first out, 150 miles,I noticed a high pitched whin, not very loud but could be heard, between 62 through 65 mph. 12000 miles later the range has dropped to 55 through 65 mph, & and the noise is getting louder [or maby i'm starting to pay more attention to it ?] i only hear the whin in a no load condition, that is no acceleration or deceleration, like letting off the gas while going down a hill or slowing down for traffic. or accelerating to cruis speed. i know little about trans and hate to take it to the locale chevy grage & and just hand them my credit card , you guys know what i mean. Hope somebody can help, thanks in advance chas

Might be the 'sell me quick' bearing, too. Definitely time to have a shop or real guru look at it. It is probably NOT your imagination. Every time I thought something 'might' be going wrong with my transmission I ended up with a much lighter wallet soon thereafter.

Could the whine be coming from the rear end? When you put a load on the rear you change the angle that the drive shaft goes in at the pinion, thus causeing the whine to stop under a load. If it is the automatic Transmission, it could be a faulty front pump making your noise. But the clue is that the noise has changed from one speed range to another which to me sounds like the ring gear and pinion in the rear end.

chas@65,

Sounds like you are hearing the back lash of the rear end gears,

Probably nothing to worry about unless it is really screaming,, Might check the fluid level in the rear end,, maybe change it if it has been a long time since,,

If it really bothers you take it to a shop and have them reset the gears and change the oil at the same time..

Good Luck

Okay, now that you have added that the noise is there on a pull and not on coast that sounds like ring gear and pinion noise. On the pull side of the gear the ring gear is not aligning in the right position on the pinion gear which will cause the gears to whine on a pull and then quieten down on the coast side. You are looking at overhauling a rear end instead of a transmission which will be much cheaper. That should make you happy! Don't gamble on repairs while you have it down. Replace the ring gear and pinion and all the bearings to be sure of a good repair. You might want to check around in the junk yards to see if you might find a good carrier housing with the gears in it, with a warranty that it will work properly when installed. It could save you money. You can put the carrier housing in a vice and take some marking grease made for the purpose of setting the pattern on the ring gear and pinion to make sure it is meshing correctly by turning the pinion. That takes a train mechanic to do that, but it will save you some grief later. Have a nice repair and enjoy your rig.
