I was in N.C. in February & they refused the mastercard that I always used there. Yhey wanted a pin #. I always used my debit as a charge to escape the fees. I asked why & the cashier couldn't tell me. Neither could the manager. I called 1-800-walmart & all they told me was that Walmart & Sam's club would no longer be accepting m/c or visa. I have a Walmart charge as well as a Sam's charge but I don't want to chase paying. My charges come directly out of my check acct. I called my bank to find out that Walmart sued m/c & visa. She also told me that it did not go well for them so they are no longer going to accept the cards . Therefore I'm no longer going to shop @ these stores. It is the principle. I will shop @ Target. They have better clearance prices anyway.

I thought/believe it is signature debit transactions they no longer accept. These are when you use a debit card as a credit card and sign for the purchase. Card companies were gouging WM (and us) charging 4x more for them than debit/PIN. One outcome of this is that card issuers are lowering fees in response. May never get passed on, of course.

Banks rate higher on my bottom-feeders list than do retailers. WM is doing the customer a favor by opposing their unjustified fees. Those fees are paid by us in the end.

While at Wal-Mart this afternoon I ask them whether or not they still honored credit cards. The clerk told me that they accept Visa and Master Card; however, for Master Card you must have your PIN. It is not necessary for Visa. She didn't know why.

I just used my Visa debit card at Walmart yesterday and did not use the PIN. No problem.

Glitch Overcharges Consumer Credit Cards
By DAN D'AMBROSIO, AP

DENVER (April 4) - A computer hardware problem caused more than 800,000 credit and debit card transactions to be double- or triple-billed last week at Wal-Mart stores nationwide, according to officials at First Data Corp., which handled the electronic payments.

The excess Visa and Mastercard charges, which occurred Wednesday and were posted on Thursday, have been reversed, First Data spokeswoman Staci Busby said Sunday.

Busby said the problem showed up on reports the company generates for quality control purposes. She said it's unclear how many customers were affected, and that she had no other details about the hardware problem.

"Anyone who conducted a transaction with a Visa or Mastercard on March 31 should check their statements," Busby said.

Danetta Thompson, a spokeswoman for Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart said Sunday the retailer had posted signs about the problem and was informing customers. She said signs in the stores direct customers to First Data's toll-free number, 888-893-0626.

"I feel like they've got their arms around the problem," Thompson said. "Those charges have been reversed."

Busby said some affected customers may not see the reversed charges on their accounts until Tuesday. She said First Data has instituted additional measures as a result of the overbilling.

First Data processes payments for retailers, moving money from consumers' accounts to merchants' bank accounts. The Greenwood Village, Colo.-based company has 30,000 employees and operates in 195 countries and territories.

OK Folks, I'm a Walmart cashier and will try to set this straight. We DO take regular Mastercard and Visa Credit Cards. We still take Visa debit/credit cards with a signature but cannot take the Mastercard debit/credit cards unless you use your pin #. What we were told is that because Mastercard also sells debit cards to people with a poor credit rating and that sometimes they can use them to get over the limit of the funds that are available by using them at places that aren't hooked up electronically that we are to accept pin # cards only. I hope this helps to clear up the confusion for you. Liz M

Ok Liz M. I bought 4 cases of beer last week at Sam's and they loged my purchase with a statement that I was not going to resell the beer. Why?

[quoteOk Liz M. I bought 4 cases of beer last week at Sam's and they loged my purchase with a statement that I was not going to resell the beer. Why? hpk[/quote] Walmart and Sams operate separately. Since she is a cashier for Walmart, she might not know Sam's practices. However, I would hazard a guess that you have a business membership rather than a personal one. If you do, then that is probably the reason for the statement. I believe that if you have a business membership and intend to resell the merchandise then you are not charged tax since you will be charging tax when you resell the merchandise. If you don't have a business membership, then it is strange and next time you are there you might want to question the customer service people. I do not work for either Sams or Walmart, this is just my observation from having shopped at both Costco and Sams and seeing others with business memberships buying merchandise.

I read that alot of stores are tired of paying the chage card fees and would prefer you to use your debit function (huh- then YOU get a charge, not them!) and in some cases are asking to to enter a pin # even though you pressed CREDIT. They then charge it like a debit. The article said you should refuse and make them re-ring the purchase and charge it YOUR way.
