We are probably going to be purchasing a used Class A motorhome with a Ford V10 engine that has only 14k miles on it. It has had regular maintenance (oil changes, etc.) while in use, but it's been sitting for about 6 to 8 months with little to no use. It's doubtful that anything could be troubling a V10 with this little mileage (goes down the road really well and starts right up with no obvious problems). We are getting a Good Sam warranty on it at the time of purchase just to be sure. But it it necessary to have a mechanic go over it just to be sure or would you think that everything was okay with an engine that had so little mileage on it?

Is Good Sam going to want it checked before they issue a warranty? If not, I would still want it gone over by a service agency for peace of mind. You might ask about the gas in the tank sitting for 6 to 8 months as to whether its okay. Sounds like you found a good deal. Good luck. Frank

Is it less than three years old...if so it still has warranty. Most new engines sit for at least six months before someone buys them. I would not be too worried at that low mileage.

Everything SHOULD be ok. I traded a ford v10 with 20 thousand miles and it was fine. Break fluid on the ford chasis is susposed to be changed every two years. You might find out the last fluid changes and if your close forget the milage and have that done. You don't say what year but its important to flush the radiator and the transmission oil should be changed if its close and of course all the filters and the generator should be serviced. More preventive maintainence than problems.. Good luck with your new MH and Happy Trails

We have a '00 rig which came new with a '99 engine. The darn thing burned excessive amounts of oil and finally we got a new engine ('02) at 21000 miles. We have put 17000 miles on the new engine and it has no problems.
It seems that Ford had a problem in '99 with some of the early engines. It was later corrected. Lots of owners got new engines under warranty.
I don't know how Good Sam would handle such a situation. Excessive oil consumption is a very hard thing to argue with the warranty people.

It's a 2000, so no longer under warranty unfortunately. And according to Good Sam, they will issue an extended warranty without a service check. But they did tell me that they do random checks if something doesn't feel right to them. Whatever that means.

I don't think you have anything of concern. Simply change the oil and filter, grease the 13 zerk fittings. Service the generator. Change the air filter. Change the brake fluid and bleed the brakes. (My wife and I did our brakes in about a half hour and saved big dollars) A quart of brake fluid is only about $4.00.
I have a 2000 chassis but the warranty didn't start until my July 2002 sales date. You might call Ford to see when the warranty ends. They can tell by the VIN.

The present mh we have was three years old and only had 11,275 miles on it when purchased. We drove it home from Az without problems and wouldn't expect that there should be any with you comtemplated purchase. I wouldn't let the lack of mileage on a mh concern me unless it was way out of line.

I don't think you'll have any problems with the engine. Modern engines are designed much better than their predecessors of 20 years ago. Enjoy the unit.
