I use the propane to cool the fridge before we leave, turn off the tank while traveling, then turn the propane back on once I get to the campsite. Per my owners manual.
I can't imagine wanting to drive down the hwy with a fire lit in my trailer.??

I agree with family-o-4. More to the point is do you want to pull into a gas station with a pilot light burning 6 feet away from a filling pump? You'd never do it with a cigarette so why try it with a propane flame?

This kinda explains the burning rig I passed on my way to Florida last year. I didn't understand at the time how you'd get a propane fire started on the inside of the trailer while driving down the road.

The other side to this is also the side of the filling stations... most everyone I have ever been in state on the pumps to extinguish all pilots and turn off propane before filling.... Though I also travel with my propane on for the fridge, I do turn it off when I gas up.
Comes down to your own sense of safety and choice. There are MANY agruments on both sides of the coin.
But don't stop campin!

Quote: Another question: Since I have an older camper, is there a way to check for propane line leaks? I'm 99% sure that I don't have any leaks, but it would be comforting to know for sure.
I bought a propane guage from walmart to check my PU for leaks. It was suppose to check the level of the propane tank. After putting the guage on the PU I was able to detect and fix two leaks.
