I don't like heights! A year from now, I'll be crossing the country west to east to spend the rest of the year on the east coast. I throught of traveling Hwy 2 and coming down into Michigan from the north. That means the bridge!! Anyone have any experience crossing it? Is it 2 or 4 lanes? I can usually do the 4+ lane bridges. Would appreciate any advice.

dshogman,

I can relate. I too have a fear of hieghts. I do drive over the Big Mac but never enjoy it. It is a four lane bridge but when they are doing any knid of work(which is almost always)they shut down one lane. To make matters worst, the inside lanes are steel grating and just don't have the same feel as the pavement.

All that said, the Bridge Authority will drive you over free of charge. I've never used this service but have considered it.

Its 2 lanes each way but there is always some type of work being done on the bridge, also the left lane in each direction is open grating (you can see the water).

It is 4 lanes -- I have crossed it lots. I personally am always glad to get off this bridge as it does not feel like pavement and it has a sway to it. My husband thinks this is funny and has no problem driving on it at all. It is my choice to view it from the waterfront or at night when it is all lit up

I guess that means you do not want to be there on Labor day to walk across the bridge with the Governor - a long time tradition.

I understand your concern, my wife is like that as well. She has not had a problem with the bridge (now the Smoky Mtns or Shenandoah when she is in the passenger seat on the outside lane is another story). One nice thing is, generally people are not in too much hurry going over-so you can travel at what spped you are comfortable with.

We have been over the bridge a few times - never a problem.
However, on high wind days I understand the bridge is an issue.

Do you know if their drivers have motorhome experience? The website just says they will drive it for you.

Yep,
Been across many times, 2 lanes going north and two lanes going south. The inside lane on both sides is a grate and not really fun to drive on so stay in the right hand or outside lane. Alot of times during the summer they are working on the bridge which means you have no choice and have to drive on the grate, just go slow and keep both hands on the wheel, you will be fine.

Every bridge is a scary bridge! I cross the Mackinaw every year but have no choice but grin and bear it. The longer it is- the worse it is..

I'm sure they can drive your rig across just fine. I think that bridge scares alot of folks. As long as you pay attention and do a safe speed you'll have no troubles, with the construction in the summer you usually don't go real fast anyways, of course when you get stopped and it's windy you can feel the bridge moving.

If your coming across via US 2, after you pass through the small town of Cut River, stop at the Cut River Bridge and have a look around. It's neat to look around, but with your fear of bridges, cross it first then park. It sits high above the Lake Michigan shoreline and the Cut River. It's about 20 miles west of St Ignace.
