Heading for Nova Scotia in July. Leaving on a Friday and since we live one mile from the Garden State Parkway (just outside of Atlantic City), it would be the easiest route north. However, as all Jerseyites know, the GSP has a tollbooth every 10 miles and the traffic can be horrendous.

Any other ideas on how to hook up with the New York State Thruway?

George,

I lived in NJ for years before I got smart and got out.

I can't think of any other way to get to the NY Thruway other than GSP. You could fall back on Rt 9 but with the traffic and the lights it might take days to get out of the state. Perhaps the Palisades Parkway? You can get off the GSP sooner and I know that it connects with the NY Thruway just east of the GSP cannection. That road has vehicle restrictions, however. You might want to check into it.

George

I live just west of New Gretna, NJ in Bass River and travel about an hour to Eatontown via GSP everyday. I know what you mean. If you were to take other roads such as route 9, it would take you longer than a crowded, traffic jamed Parkway would. I think the answer is to time your leaving. Do not go during the commuter rush hour. I go up north Jersey via GSP for business occasionaly and wait until the back end of the rush hour to leave. Leaving Port Republic (my wife is a vetinarian next door, in Absecon)after 8-9 am and before 1 pm might be your best bet. Luckily, all of northern New Jersey will be heading south on Friday evening to get to the shore. At least you're heading in the opposite direction.
PS I'm also going to Nova Scotia in Aug., but not in my MH though

...and you can greatly ease your wait time at toll booths if your vehicle is equipped with an EZPass transponder.

I hate to reply to this, because I seem to get jumped on all the time. See http://www.rv.net/cforum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/13920138.cfm

Since your from Jersey, you know that travel on the Parkway during Sunday northbound is out of the question as well as 6am - 9:30 am or so above the Toms River tollbooth. You could leave at 830am, take your time and you should just catch the end of the rush hour by the time you get north.

I have driven to down east Maine, but I went via Howe Caverns in Upstate NY the east across NY, Vt and Hew Hampshire catching 95 on the coast. I would recommend the Tappan Zee Bridge versus the GWB.

I guess there are shorter or faster ways to go, but I would go over the Tappan Zee to 95 north, then skirt Boston on 495 and continue up 95 to Maine.

An alternate would be crossing the Tappan Zee then going up the Hutchinson River Parkway (I think is Rt 15), then catch 91 near Meriden, Ct. Then catch 84 E at Hartford and go to 90 E and then 290 E. 290 runs into 495 North, then into 95 North which bypasses pretty much all the zoos and gets you on 95 above Boston and your on your way to Bangor.

From there your on your own, as they say in Jersey, your on your own 'cause I ain't ever been 'dere before...

Enjoy your trip, as a side trip going or coming, check out Reversing Falls in down east Maine.

you could take one of two ways:

1) gsp to 287 north to the thruway

2) gsp to 78 west to 24 west to 287 north, takes about 15 miles off #1

no tolls no nothing. The gsp Sucks above 78 when you get to the Oranges area, 78 usually moves quick and 24 is a nice ride, 287 smooth sailing puts you right on the thruway in Mahwah

Getting to the Tappan Zee is described pretty well above but on the other side, don't take I-95 through Connecticut. Right after you get over the bridge take I-684 north to I-84. I-84 east will end at the Mass Pike. Take it east to I-495 and you'll cut off a lot of unnecessary mileage through south CT and Rhode Island. I-495 is kind of a big loop around Boston but you'll be glad you didn't get too close, unless you like traffic.
