with just over 12k miles on the truck, the front end is starting to shake and it feels like i have eggs for steering tires. so, i go to the local goodyear store (same as the tire brand i have) and the man says " it's a dually,very common and tires just will not last. don't waste your money for balancing, just check alignment and rotate tires every 5k miles". is this true or what? do all duallies have this problem. at this rate, i'll be lucky to get 40k miles from these tires.

Poorboy, what kind of Goodyears do you have and what air pressure are you running? I had LT235 85R 16 Wrangler RT/S load range "E" on my dually and after 20,000km's (1.6km to a mile) I had just wore the nibs off. It was a dually 4X4 Diesel. I did the alignment every 10,000k's no rotations (polished wheels) I ran 52 PSI up front and 32PSI on the rear. Max is 80 PSI with load range "E" very even wear.

Balance the tires cause once you have an irregular wear pattern, it is darn near impossible to get rid of it. If its shaking, try throwing them on the back and bring the rear outside tires to the front. They will have the most even wear. Possible the tires on the back now have an over inflation wear pattern (centers wore down). The fronts to the back may even the wear/out of balance problem but not likely.

Most all trucks need to have their tires rotated on regular basis. Better shocks helps, as does alignmentn in good condition.
Otherwise will "cup" the front tires.
Seems more prevelant with 4x4's, but not exculsively so.
Drove by this truck on way to dad's and just had to stop and take a picture. Worst case of cupped tires ever seen. 3/4 ton Chevy, but have seen cupping on other badges too.

Old days would shave tires to get more miles and get it "rounder", but most tire manufacturers void warranties if shaved. Racers still shave some tires to reduce tread lug squirm or to tune the tire for particular track/condition.

I work in a chevy garage and we have had one person with duels that needed rears at 40k from spinning the tires but the fronts still had tread and look good. We try to get people with duels to rotate them every 5k just to keep them from cupping. Most don't want to bother with it.
We do see a lot of cupped tires on trucks due to lack of rotation.
We needed tires (firestone factory steeltex) replaced on our single rear wheel truck at 40k. With the 8.1 it was from spinning the tires all the time. Not burn outs just from taking off. We rotated them every 5k. They were not cupped just to thin to be driving on Michigan slick winter roads.

I have right at 20,000 on my Goodyears and they are hardly showing any wear at all on my 3500. I do rotate my tires regularly. This is my 4th dually and I have never had that problem with any of them.

My father-in-law has a 3500 4X2 duelly with the same problem. He was towing a 22ft TT without a WD hitch, and he was told that what was causing the problem. Short trips OK, long trips (10k miles plus)seemed to wear the front tires. He went to a WD hitch and ribbed highway steering tires and hasn't had a problem since.
Just thought I would share his experience with you. Hopefully it provides some insight into your problem.

I have the truck in my sig and just bought it a few months ago. The tires are wearing like iron. I had a bad drivers side front tire due to the tire not being balanced, the tire was cupping on the inside tread. I was worried it was ball joints or allignment but all that checks out. The reason I don't rotatoe is because I have aluminum rims and it means I have to dimount tires to rotate. I keep and eye on my pressure and balance once a year and they are wearing very evenly. I run 65 psi all the way around. 32 psi seems to be to dangerous in a tire that is made to hold 80 psi, especially if you have a diesel, that motor weighs alot and 32 psi won't cut it. Just my opinion you have to do what works for you.

Cupped tires are not caused by lack of rotation. All rotation does is even out the wear amoung all the tires. Cupped tires are caused by the tire bouncing on the road, usually from bad shocks.
Poorboy,
Find a better tire shop, especially one that deals with medium duty trucks. And, I don't think Goodyear tires are the quality they used to be. Have them look for bad shocks or worn suspension parts, or a defective tire, or a bent wheel. It is entirely possible that you may need new shocks...GM's motto the last few years seems to be, "Cheap-R-Us." If the shocks are bad, you could get warranty replacement and more of those same shocks, or you could buy quality shocks like Bilsteins. The advice you got from the Goodyear shop is good advice...for them to sell lots of tires. Get at least your fronts balanced and rotate...but first find the cause of the bounce and uneven tire wear. Misalignment won't cause the bounce you describe.
