We spent the Thanksgiving weekend at Oliver Lee Memorial State Park near Alamogordo, NM. We signed up for the Lake Lucero Tour at White Sands National Monument, for Saturday, and it was worth it. The park ranger was very knowledgeable about the Geology on how White Sands came to be. We then went into White Sands and had a fun time. We picked up a plastic disk so the kid could slide down the dunes and the wife and I walked down the Alkali Flat Trail. Even though it is Winter, do bring water with you. So if you get down that way go have a look, it COOL!!! Also this State park is one of my favorites!

White Sands National Monument is truly one of the most spectacular places my family and I have ever visited. Take Oboy's advice if you are planning on going with kids bring a snow disk to slide down the dunes. It is definitely a wonderful experience.

Unfortunately a dust storm was kicking up when we were there made things quite unbearable maybe next time. Trinity site is somewhere I've always wanted to visit but it's only open 2 days a year. We'll plan the next visit to be during one of those two days.

While you are in the White Sands area check out the Space Musuem in Alamogordo and go on up the Mt. to Cloudcroft and down to Inn of the Mountain Gods for golf or slot machines in the Apache reservation on the way to Ruidosa. If you have time, and kids are with you, take them to Lincoln County, Billy the Kid country and home of Smokey Bear.
I am also partial to the Goddard Musuem and the Alien Musuem in Roswell.

We were there in late Sept., 1st time I'd been since a kid and that's a long time. My Bride had never been. We were with 3 other couples and had a ball on the dunes, wish we had been advised about the discs. The museum in Alomogordo is really nice and you can see the dunes from there, up on the mountain. Neat place.
