Hah! That got your attention, didn't it? Nope, I don't mean the terrorist kind so don't get upset.

What I'm talking about is "thread hijacking", and I guess it just boils down to common courtesy, right?

How many of you, after picking a thread (a subject) to read have thought "Now, that's a question/subject I'm interested in, but I also want to know ???? or ???? or such and such so I'll just add my question to this thread!".

Then, because the second question is probably pertinant and/or relevant, it takes on a life of it's own and away goes the original thread, question forgotten and we're off in a new direction??

Have you ever done that? Or had that happen to a thread you posted?

Now, I'm sure that some of us have been guilty of this very thing. It happened to me (on another forum), when the second post said "I too am interested in the answer, but I would also like to know such and such" and that completely ended the subject as far as my question went. And you know what? THE ADMINISTRATOR of that forum was the third poster that took my thread off the subject!!

Then I started thinking about whether I'd seen it here and yes, I have. It happened a little while ago when I posted a joke and then someone else wished us all a Merry Xmas and someone else took offence at the "Xmas" and away we went, until the Moderator was forced to delete the whole darn thread!! Don't get me wrong, I certainly don't blame the Moderator because I think the action was appropriate in the circumstance. I'm just trying to illustrate how quickly we can get off topic. In this particular instance we went from an attempt to cheer folks up in the morning with a joke to a vitriolic diatribe that caused a lot of hard feelings to a lot of people.

Anyway folks, what I'm getting at here is, when you're posting to someone else's thread, let's all try and remember that it IS someone else's thread and try not to 'hijack' their thread, inadvertantly or not?

If you want to watch it, pick "subscribe to topic" in the blue bar above and if you've got an additional question, pick "new topic" and start your own thread!

You'll likely get lot's of opinions, because after all, it's just like THIS, JMHO

Yeah, I hear you.

What bugs me is misleading subject headlines. And posting something in a category that has nothing to do with that category.

Yep, actually drove to all of these places---in the last eight years. Missed Rhode Island and New Jersey.

I think I'll "hijack" this thread to talk about off-topic threads. This one is off-topic for "Fifth-Wheels" and should be in "General RVing or, better yet, "Around the Campfire." I'm sure it will be moved before long.

What was the joke? (Oh, did I just hijack the thread, I'm sorry.)

How about starting a new service for all those new to the forums. You can be the head of the hijack police. If someone even thinks about hijacking a thread, you can jump in there and give 'em a reminder and a little prodding.

Yeah it happens. Kind of like asking a politician a question and having them answer a question they wished you'd asked

The tolerence of the forum members on thread hijacking varies from site to site. I actively participate in over a dozen forums and belong to another dozen. Some of these sites are more like extended families and treat the forum discussions as such, where changing subject isn't frowned on as long as it is halfway linked to the original discussion. Some of the sites, like this one, seem to shoot you if you vary the slightest from the topic of the original post. Then there are the ones in between.

I prefer the ones like a family. On that one (specialize in a particular vehicle model), we go out of the way to help people on everything from the vehicles, to trails, to personnel problems. We open up our doors to the others traveling in our neck of the woods whether it is just to show them a good resturaunt, a breakdown, or even a place to stay. We have moved spare parts (axles, bodies, frames, etc) from Georgia to Maine without a charge by handoffs from one person to another. All the things that a large family would do.

The ones where hijacking will shoot you, I don't see this happening. I've seen people here that needed a trailer moved a few miles and no-one has offered to help.

So let the level of worry about hijacking be a good indication of how far the people are willing to help out. Giving information is easy and cheap. Actually turning wrenches and going out of your way to help is priceless. I'll be glad to let all my threads get hijacked in exchange for knowing I have true friends that will help me out.
