Hi,
We are planning a trip through NY in June. These two parks are
possible destinations. We will be taking our 34' fifth wheel. We
were wondering:
1) will these parks accomodate the trailer, or are they for tents
and smaller trailers?
2) Are there water and electric hokups available?
3) Would you recommend these parks, or something else nearby?
4) what is there to see or do near the 1000 islands area?
Thanks

I can comment on Four Mile Creek. We were there in July. We thought it was a very nice park. You will find sites to accomodate your trailer. There are electric sites there. Water is available at locations in the campground, but not at each site.
While the place did not fill up, we were glad we had a reservation when we went. We liked a different site better than the one we reserved, and were able to switch when we got there, though. We had a site that backed up overlooking Lake Ontario. It was very nice. If we ever get up that way again, we'd go back.

4 mile creek is a nice S.P. right on the shores of Lake Ontario, about 15 minutes from the falls. Restrooms are clean and park is clean. Their is plenty of room for your rig. I'll be there the 1st week of May to shake out whatever before leaving for Charlotte, N.C. the following week.
There is a lot to do in the 1000 Islands both on the American and the Canadian side. Make sure you catch the Tour Boat ride it's well worth it. Have a great time and enjoy

I haven't camped at either so can't comment on them.
Here's the LINK to the NYS Parks in Reserve America. You can go to each Park, click on the CG map & it will show you the size of the camp site & whether or not it's electric. Hope it helps.

We stayed at Four Mile Creek the summer before last while visiting the falls. It was a beautiful, spacious, well-maintained campground. Like said before, it has electric sites (many N.Y. state parks don't), areas to fill with water, and two dump stations. It's nice and quiet and the price is low. We'd happily go back also.

We have camped at Wellesley Island State Park. It is a nice park with some full hook ups available. The sites are open with few trees but we didn't mind. It is a great place to bike. There is a nature center there too. They also have small motor boats and canoes for rent on the premises.
It is a beautiful area we have friends that have a cottage there and we have visited frequently. A nice little town to explore is Clayton and if you go to the Canadian side we love Kingston. There are many state parks in the area (I've heard Kring Point is nice too) just go to the map on Reserveamerica and you can get the details on all of them. Have a great trip!

We have camped at both and can recommend both.
At Wellesley Island, we prefer the electric only sites. The full hook-up sites aren't as attractive in our opinion. There are many things to do in the area. Be sure to take the tour boat that shows you many of the mansions and takes you to Boldt castle.
As for Four Mile, we are only about 15minutes away and camp there several times a year. We would gladly give you our recommended sites if you PM us. Its a quiet park with a lot of open area. Don't expect a beach just because it is on the lake though. It is a rocky shore with small cliffs. There is swimming available at Fort Niagara State Park which is only a couple miles down the road. There is a small fee to use the pool and waterslides but your entrance to the park will be free because you are staying at a state park. There are also tours of the fort for a fee.
We strongly suggest you consider a stay at Letchworth State Park. It is an amazing place. It is refered to as the "Grand Canyon of the East". This park is HUGE. We cannot stress how nice a place this is to see. There are waterfalls, nature trails that follow the gorge for miles upon miles, all the wildlife you can imagine and more. If you do a search on this forum for Letchworth you will find that many people agree with us.

We have stayed at Wellesley Island State Park for the first week of June for the past 8 years. We love it. There are lots of things to see and do in the immediate area such as Alexandria Bay, Clayton and a short drive across the border to Ontario in Gananoque and Kingston. The campground is exceptionally clean and well maintained.
We are going again this year but earlier. The long weekend in May for Canadians is Victoria Day and falls on May 21 through may 23. I think this coincides with Memorial Day in the US? We have reserved from May 20 through May 24. During July and August the campground is generally full to the brim and you should make reservations up to a year in advance.
We have met with a couple of campers from the Buffalo area for the past 6 years and this year we are going to Sampson State Park in the Finger Lakes region for a change, in August.
