There appears to be a significant climb/descent between Hagerstown, MD and Cumberland, MD along RT68 just northwest of Berkley Springs.

Is there a better way to go than along RT70 and RT68 to avoid steep mountain climbs??? We will be doing this in July, so icy weather is not an issue here.

Thanks for any information.

If you are going to Cumberland you haven't gotten to the bigger climbs on 68. The steepest climb is west of Cumberland to just west of Frostburg.

I don't know a better way than 68, I-70 takes you out of the way if you goal is get to Cumberland.

I-70 to I-68 in Hancock. Cumberland is about 35 miles west of Hancock on I-68.

Run this route all the time... Between Hagerstown and Cumberland is not the steepest climb. Right past Cumberland is. I-68 is just humps all the way to Ohio. But you don't use much fuel going down the other sides. If you don't mind milage go i-70 to Breezewood then 30 to Bedford then Rt 220 to Cumberland, little longer but no climbs other than town hill south of breezewood and my old 454 can pull it pretty good.

I agree the Breezewood PA to Bedford PA to Cumberland MD is your only alternate route but really out of the way. You won't have any problems coming up from Hagerstown to Cumberland. Like others have said west of Cumberland is the big mountains. Just take your time and you'll be fine. Truck and Campers come this way all the time. Why are you coming to Cumberland???

You won't have any trouble on I70/68 going to Cumberland with the equipment listed in your signature. Sideling Hill is the longest pull (the mountain just west of Hancock with the deep cut in the top). I68 is a beautiful ride with very little traffic. You'll enjoy it. On the other hand I've heard old-timers describe Town Hill on I70 between Hancock and Breezewood as one of the toughest climbs east of the Mississippi.

Thanks, everyone for the good information.
I feel better about the drive.

Actually, we are not going as far as Cumberland.
We are going west from Harrisburg along I70 and then pick up RT 68.
We only go about 12 to 20 miles along 68, then head due sout to a place called Little Orleans. It's a campground that some froends of ours have a permanent site at, and we're goijnhg to visit them for a few days.

Again, thanks for the info.

SteadyEddy,
The wife and I visited the Little Orleans Campground for a drive thru a week after high rain. Be careful it doesn't rain hard because there is a low bridge road leading to the campground that is prone to covering over with water. Also there are some winding roads leading to the campground after you get off 68... take it slow.

I-76(Pa turnpike) runs just south of Harrisburg (Pa)(east-west road) If that is the case then run I-76 to the bedford exit then 220 south. I-70/76 run the pa pike only from new stanton(mp 75) to Breezewood (mp 161)I-76 is the primary interstate number for the pike

Visit the infamous Bill's store at Little Orleans. I used to go cycling on the C&O canal with a bunch of high school kids, we always camped at Little Orleans. The kids loved it because they could go to Bill's.

You have a few good "hills" to go up on I68 but you'll end up going twice as far to go any other way. I drove from Finksburg out to Grantsville and back today. (No TT). Most of the truck traffic stays on 70 so you can take your time on 68. Every hill has a third lane so you can take your time if you want.

If the Potomac is not high or flooded, Its nice in the area around Little Orleans for fishing and canoeing.

Have a good trip.
