UPDATE:
Well I ordered a Putnam hitch last Tuesday from RV Direct and got it on Thursday so I was very pleased with that. I put it on yesterday and it probably took me longer to get everything set up, get the tools out, and get the spare tire off than it did to change the received itself. One of my concerns was the bolts on the old one being rusted on but they came off fairly easy. Then the new one went on but I was concerned I had the wrong hitch becausse the holes from the original received didn't line up right with the new one. There is another hole in the frame behind where the hitch mounts that it did line up with so I used that one. The receiver comes with spacers that took care of the gap and I just called Putnam to confirm I did it right.
The Putnam seems so much stronger and better built than the original. It seemed to weigh twice as much and is more solid feeling. I think it was a good investment.
The only thing I still need to do is set up the wiring plug again since the old plug was mounted to the received. I am thinking about drilling into the bumper and mounting it there like the new Chevys have. For anyone that has done this, where did you get the plug part to mount in the bumper and were you able to just plug the wires back in using the original end on the wires or did you have to splice the wires together?
BenK, thanks for the links. I spent a little time reading them and now see the error of my ways. I still need to reset the hitch and everything with the new received and will be a lot more careful with it until it's done.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
I used this part to connect to the factory harness without splicing. Of course, this puts my socket under the bumper instead of mounted flush, but it solves your wiring problem.

Thanks, I have the same vertical sloppyness and use a shim on the top to reduce the play. I think I will be replacing my receiver in the near future.
