I'm looking at FRED chassis MHs with the 300HP Cummins and the Allison 5spd.
My question: Is the 5spd the way to go? Or do I want to look at the 340hp Cummins with the 6spd?
Anybody out there with the 300/5spd? Experiences? MPG?
The specific mh is a Tiffin.
Is anybody else besides Tiffin and Gulf Stream and Newmar using the FRED chassis?

The 340/6 spd is only used on the heavier mh's. So to get the 340/6 you are also buying bigger. Ours is the 6 speed . On a recent 4000 mile trip to the SE, I think it only went into 6th a handfull of times. Level roads with little headwind.

I believe all MC chassis's are FRED's! Just expand each one to see.

Don't understand the answer and the link doesn't work.
Freightliner makes at least two different FRED lines (that I know of) the 300hp and the 340hp. The 300 uses the 5spd and the 340 uses the 6spd

Sorry about the bad link.
I was attemping to answer your question at to if there is other manf. that use the 300 hp variant. If you use the built on Freightliner link in the product drop down, you will see the current and past year builders.

We have an 07 Allegro Bay FRED with 300HP engine/5 speed Allison. This was right before Tiffin changed to the 340/6 speed. Maybe I don't know any better, but have been very happy with the engine/tranny package. We have traveled extensively through N GA hills and Smoky Mountains with no power issues - Monteagle Mountain is not a big deal. MPG is 10-12 pulling CRV toad 62-65 mph, 10 in the Smokies, 12 in flat Florida.Nice thing about our engine is I do not have to look for ULSD - I can use LSD or ULSD - whatever is available.

I have not driven your engine/tranny combo, but looking strictly at the gearing numbers I think the 6 speed might be a bit much. I don't see the 5.9 or 6.7 Cummins working very well with a double overdrive gear - as Gouda pointed out. Flat ground, no wind.
I wouldn't expect mileage to change very much either.
Now if this were a larger Cummins the double overdrive would be worth it.

Ah I get it now. I've been to their site. I'll go back and check for that. I know they list many manufacturers but they cross all the different chassis they sell. Thanks

We had a Tropical (22000lbs) with the 5speed/300 cummins and I had no complaints about power..pulled Tracker toad Coast to Coast and averaged 8.4mpg at 62mph.
