Time is approaching fast as we are getting ready to shove off on the 20th for a cross country trip with the only destination on the first leg set on an arrival time. We need to be in Fairfax, VA for my HS reunion on 2 Oct 2009. We will be using I-80 for most of that crossing with stops to see some friends in Columbus, OH and Carmel, IN then dropping down to Fairfax. After the reunion we are spending a few days visiting the DC sites. Then we will head to NJ to visit some more folks and then head south thru MD VA shore and into NC and SC before heading to TN and stopping to visit Sleepy. After that it is head west going to TX and along the coast and to the Space Center and the Alamo then up to NM and AZ and onto Los Angeles for THX- giving with my Dad. Then back to Tacoma the first week of Dec. This is going to be a grand trip.
I do hope that we are able to cross paths with some fellow TC’ers along the way. Also open to any suggestions on what to see and do. Hope to post a trip report as we progress. I am really looking forward to this adventure. Warm regards to all, Capt PJ

Assume you'll be on I10 across AZ? How long do you have. Give me an idea and I can suggest a few things.

We will be doing the same sort of trip a month later and to tell the truth I am sort of dreading it. It should be fine once I am on the road. I hope.

Sounds great...though personally, I can't imagine trying to find a parking spot with a TC in DC. I imagine it would be pure hell. I'd say find a place you can stay near the end of a metro stop. Ride the metro in for your sight seeing.
I'm generally not much of a tourist unless there is some real adventure of the physical type involved. However, I've been to DC a few times without the physical adventure goal...more of the standard tourist. I don't think you can beat DC when it comes to good museums/exhibits/monuments to visit.
And, as far as I know...if you contact your House of Representatives Office...you might be able to schedule a tour....I've done it a few times for medium sized groups...and it was FANTASTIC! And, from what I remember...the office staff is a pretty good source on what to see government wise while you are there (nat'l archives, the mint, supreme court, etc.). Too bad you aren't doing it in the spring to see the cherry blossoms....real neat.

Suggestions...if you can swing it in NM...check out Carlsbad Caverns. I was there just after Christmas last year. If you are more adventurous...they have special tours that you have to be there at the right time for. We didn't know this when we planned our visit (or didn't plan..it was just decided we'd visit on the way through). You can always do the self guided tour...but I think the "special" tour that goes off the beaten path in the caverns would be a whole lot more memorable. I also heard that if you time it right, you can visit and see all the bats exit the cave at dusk....supposed to be quite an experience....but something tells me that was only in the summer time.
There is a decent NM state campground on a lake or reservoir about a 45 to 60 minute drive from the caverns...I think it was $20 a night with at least electrical if not full hookups. It was just north of whatever town it is that is near the caverns. Best state campground I've ever stayed at, especially when you factor in the price.
If you like live music...spend a couple of days in Austin on your way through Texas. Always lots of live music going on in that city...and it is kind of quirky in a neat way.
I presume you will also check out the outer banks when you head south from VA to NC and SC? I haven't done it myself...but I know others who have had good times camping right on the beach there.

I've "parked" at the subway station at Fairfax... and road the underground into DC.
PJ, Since you went to high school there you could give us some pointers.
Our grand daughter was a congressional page in 2004 and we have family all over the area.
For tc'ers that like campgrounds: Cherry Hill campground at the intersection of US 1 and the beltway is the only campground that I'd recommend... we stayed there with the kids in the early '70s... shuttlebuses into DC...
And Greenbelt Park had camp sites. I parked my camper there when I was in college... we had a lot of classes at the smithsonion.
We are looking forward to your visit...
what month are you cruising Hawaii?
