I won't go through the horror story I have from buying from a private seller, but I spent more fixing up the '93 Bounder than I paid for it. My own fault. There's a lot of good advice here, but the one that would have saved me is the independent audit. My mistake was thinking that because I had gone through 2 MHs I knew everything. So whether it is a private seller or a dealer, buyer beware.

Another thing that happens is right after someone posts a negative review of a manufacturer the very next post is "Thanks for the info. I'll never buy from that manufacturer" without even knowing if the OP is being truthful.
This happened on another forum where a person started bashing Mobile Suites over a long list of things that just didn't make sense including them not honoring their warranty. While I was on the phone with the factory one day the person on the other end asked me if I had read that post. He then told me that the guy's warranty had expired years earlier yet he still wanted things fixed for free. When the factory balked the guy went on an internet posting frenzy trying to make MS look bad.

Call the AAA or a local mechanic or RV repair place in the same town and ask them how much they would charge to complete an inspection on the vehicle.
It doesn't really matter how honest or not the salesman is - it's down to the vehicle - so spend the money to have it independently inspected before you travel. Also, the dealer may not know the true condition of the RV - might be one of 60 on their lot and I seriously doubt that many dealers inspect their stock prior to sale.

Thanks so much for the responses to my post. We are in the process of 'checking things out' right now, using the info gained here.
I have also been informed by a private message that it is ok to mention the name of a dealer and ask if anyone has had any dealings with them.
So here goes. The dealer is H.W. Motorhomes in Michigan.
Any comments?
Thanks.

Not only will the Chamber know about the dealer but also his standing in the community. Ask if he is a member and what his reputation is.
BUT, in all "deals" home, car, boat etc. you have to look after yourself and do your homework. Good Luck

Check the www.RIV.ca website to see if the MH is eligable to import. Also, make sure the manufacturer is still in business because you will need letters regarding recalls and compliance with Ontario laws. Good luck.

Give Ron Potts, Johnstown, Ohio a look. He is in a suburb of Columbus, has a small family owned and ran operation.
Of course he is a used car salesman aren't all vehicle dealers? But he does or did tell me the truth to all my questions and was willing to negotiate.
There is a web site and it lists hs used inventory. We bought a 2000 Pace Arrow from him and it seems to be as he related to us.

One for the chassis/engine and one for the coach and its appliances, etc. A automotive/truck tech and a RV tech. And if it is diesel your automotive/truck tech needs to be specialized. And a Cat tech is not going to have the computer equipment to check out a Cummins or Detroit!
