I'm looking at a '06 F-250 SD Lariat. It has 40,000 gentle miles on it. Show room clean inside and out. Chrome package, spray bed liner and Truxedo bed cover. Tires not new but decent. I'm a little afraid of the 6.0 Powerstroke. I'm inclined to buy it hoping that all of the problems of the earlier engines have Powerstrokes have been taken care of by then. I know some people have had absolutely no issues wit hthis engine. I also understand that some have had lots of problems.

I'm sure I'll hear a lot both ways. Is there anything in particular that I should be aware of or signs that there may be a problem?

I'm driving it this weekend and will have to decide what to do Monday. An extended warranty is pretty expensive but then a off the frame repair is too.

Drive it hard, and drive it often. Maintain it like the fine piece of equipment that it is.

And like my Cowboy/Marine Dad, who owned, maintained and drove Diesels for a living his entire adult life would say, "Don't do nothing stupid!"

Since 05 the 6.0 was as reliable as any engine in the Ford line-up. (according to Wikipedia.com)

Retired,
I tend not to comment on trucks I don't have personal experience with, so I can't so good or bad (personally) about your intended purchase other than to say a buddy with that same exact truck camps with us, pulls a big toy hauler and has had almost zero problems with it. He loves the truck and I'm looking to buy it when he sells it in 2011 as he's moving up to a new F450.

I have a 2006 E-350 with the 6.0 PSD. I have 53,500 miles on it of which about 45,000 are towing miles. Not any mechanical issues at all. Purrs like a kitten down the highway and pulls on the grades like they were not there. For what it's worth.

I want to leave this earth quietly in my sleep like my grandfather and not like the hysterical, screaming passengers riding in granddad's RV just before the big crash.

I think that is probably correct, but I just would not ever, ever own a 6.0L Ford diesel. The newer 6.4L are evidently good, but none hold a candle to the 7.3L overall IMHO.

Blew the head gaskets at 75,000 miles. Fixed under warranty. I will get the extended warranty.

I have owned a psd (the same one) since 99.

However if I was going to get a different tow vehicle it sure would not be the ford. They have been waffeling around since changing to the 6.0.

just the way I do things though

Honestly that is what scares me about the 6.0 motor. A 2006 w/75K should not have blown head gaskets period. I know and others have posted they have not had any issues.
However the 6.0 has had problems from the start. The above poster is not alone. He has a 2006 still having the same old EGR/cooling head gasket stretched bolts problems. There are others with late model 6.0 having the same known problems.
How do you know if you are one of the lucky ones a get a good 6.0 motor.
I personally would not take the 6.0 gamble. I need more than luck to keep my rig on the road.
