I am traveling south next month in a 40 ft. motor home and will stop in Bakersfield before heading to San Diego. MS Streets and Trips routes me though Los Angelos. Surely, I want to avoid LA and seek another route. Any suggestions?

My buddy did it last week using a mapquest suggested route and he said he was on cruise control all day. Timing to avoid afternoon rush is most important factor. I did Garden Grove to San Diego last year on my own with my GPS and it was a breeze. My GPS got me positioned in the correct lanes for the many left and right exits. I did take a wrong exit once and the greatest thing about a GPS it gave me the optimum route to get back on track.

There is no way to miss some part of the busy freeway traffic in the greater L.A, area. Timing is important, daytime between 10 A.M. and 2 P.M seems best in my experience... 3 A.M. is better. But at any time and at any place a traffic jam is possible. Just plan on it, be patient and enjoy the ride.

Hi,

You can take highway 58 east to highway 395, and then take this south to I 15.

I15 goes right into San Diego without much traffic at all. You will avoid the grapevine, and cross Tehachapi pass without going as high in elevation, and even trains cross this pass. Going down I 15 to the city of Ontario is a little steep, 6%, but only for a short distance. Trains take this pass too!

If you want to do this by mapquest, put in Bakersfield to Mohave, then Mohave to San Diego. It might route you through Palmdale and taking highway 138 - that route is OK but would take you through a few traffic lights of the city, with a bunch of traffic. Highway 58 is now a 4 lane highway with separation for most of the distance between Barstow and Mohave.

Have a fun trip!

Good Luck,

Fred.

What Golden HVAC said...go 58 to 3095 to 15....you'll thank us, you might even think about sending us cash...well, him, he beat me to it.
The ONLY issue you might have is a little wind near Tehachapi...but well worth any wind to avoid LA. You still wanna miss 15 near Rancho Cucamonga and Riverside from say 3pm til after 7pm....
