DH and I went out to Colorado a few years ago, and stayed in State parks. It was such a pain to remove everything from our camper because of bears. This is way too much trouble, and my Question is does everybody remove everything from there camper in bear country?? We love our pop-up,it is still like"camping" not like pulling a hotel room, but I was glad to get to Utah so we could keep eveything in our pop-up. We would like to go and stay for a week in one place where we can hike and just relax and enjoy the beauty. Any suggestions on where to stay and not have to remove everything from our camper? Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks Tara

Your question "does everyone remove everything in bear country"?

We certainly did when we had our popup. We made it easier on ourselves by keeping food and toiletries in containers that could easily go into the bear lockers. And we never cooked inside either. Yes it is a hassle and one of the reasons we went to a fifth wheel, though we loved our popup.

When we had our PUP and camped in NY and NJ blackbear country, we did all our cooking outside and used the outside cooler which we stored in our TV at night. Bear activity was high at night but we never had a problem.
If you ever venture out east, come visit our fine state of Delaware. I think they had a visit from a Black Bear at White Clay Creek once. I think it was a Tuesday. No worrys about bear on Delmarva, just mosquitos.

We will miss you Dad (1931-2010). You will forever be in our hearts. Thanks for getting us into camping. Something we love to do so much.

Bears and not being able to camp in certain places is why we traded up to a hard side trailer. We enjoyed our popup but if you want to cam every place you need a hardside.

Bears are smart. They know what is in cooler boxes. They know the shape and/or colors.

While staying in Sequoia NP many years ago we had to have everything out of sight including in our vehicle with windows closed. They would write you a citation if they found non-compliance. Bears were known to break windows to pursue cooler boxes.

LOL! You give up a lot more potential campsites with a fixed height TT just due to access than you ever will due to bear restrictions on popups!

In bear country, we continue to use the popup fridge for our usual purposes (mostly nonscent things like drinks, condiments, cheese, and veggie storage). The rest goes in the cooler in the van hatch, as does our dry food Sterilite unit. The van windows are deep tinted, so cannot be seen through. This kind of setup is safer from bears than a TT or 5er with smelly food inside it! If you think a grizzly can't open up a TT like a kid with a candy wrapper you are just fooling yourself. Respect the bears whatever you camp in - put your food away from where you sleep.

You should follow what ever the local guidance is for avoiding bear problems. We camped in bear COUNTRY for many years with our popup and even more years in tents while backpacking. Never had any problems with bears by following the rules posted by local officials. Different areas call for different precautions based on bear frequency and other factors.

That's why I got an Aliner (Chalet is very similar) - It has the best of both worlds unless you have a bunch of kids and need more space. A canvas pup can't be beat for room and economy when a lot of space is needed on a budget (like we needed). We towed our canvas pup all over the East Coast and enjoyed every minute before becoming empty-nesters - Now being older and more sybaritic ................

Your best bet is to bear proof any camper, popup, 5th wheel or TT. Bears are becoming more prevalent, less fearful of humans and more agressive. We have had many issues this year in Colorado including bears entering hotel lobbies in Aspen. A feed bear is a dead bear, so we all have responsibilities to prevent them for associating humans with food. If anyone thinks fiberglass or aluminum will prevent a bear from entering your trailer, good luck
