On labor day, our 1979 24' Tioga lost oil pressure on the highway. We had it towed to the nearest repair shop, where they diagnosed it. After debating about it, we decided to not have it fixed and instead purchase a newer class A that fit our needs.
However, we now need to get the class C towed home. It's currently located a little over an hour away. I'm not sure how much it weighs or how to tow it. I don't want to have a tow company haul it, as the fee would be as much as I'm trying to get rid of it for.
Any ideas? I have several friends with 1-ton diesel rigs that tow their large toy haulers or 5-wheels with no issues. I was wondering if there are some kind of heavy-duty dolly that would work. I may have acess to a 10K trailer if that would be enough. How much do those 24' Class C's weigh?

I don't want to sound like a smart a** or anything, but a 79 is worth what, $800-1000 bucks at best and yours is broke. You already didn't want to fix it so why do you have to get it home? Once there, what then? Perhaps the shop it was towed to would take it off your hands and you could be through with it once and for all. Good luck!

10k trailer would not be enough.
If you shop around tow companies, they may be able to provide a "transport" rate that is much less than their typical towing charges. You can nogotiate a transport rate when there is no immediate time constraint, and that will allow them to pick up extra work during an off-peak period.

If it was running good, with good oil pressure, I would question the decision to get rid of it for pennies. Might be something as simple as a bad oil pressure switch.

Well, the OP had it diagnosed at the shop, so what was the problem and the projected cost of repair? If over, say, $500.00 I would give it to the folks at the shop and move on with life. That thing in good shape would not bring very much and as is would probably not bring anything. Just a guess.

My solution is a similar situation was : www.junkmycar.com I had a '79 Dodge 24' and it broke down just one too many times. Handed them the keys and title and never looked back.

I have a 1984, 24' Jamboree, it weighs 9600 empty and right at 11,000 loaded. Yes it's worth "to me" considerably more than a towing fee. I often say it is the hundred thousand dollar RV worth three grand

Good luck, Gary

I too would ask the shop...."If you want it, you could have it", but only the OP knows it's over-all condition and worth. He wants to bring it home, so here is my thought.......a tow dolly. I know the front of the RV weighs a lot more than the front of a car, but if you counter-weight the RV...placing extra weight behind the rear wheels, maybe a tank-full of fresh water, and tank fulls of gray and black water, will counter-weight it enough. Go slow and steady, flasher lights etc.....and make sure you max out the tire pressure in the tow dolly. So you turn a 1 hour trip into 2.
I only would question if a full size van will fit a tow dolly.

The ugliest nastiest Motor homes, Travel Trailers, Boats....oh yeh, cars too that you will ever see. A couple can make your eyes water & itchy in seconds. Then comes the resporatory response. The CARS Ministry takes them with blown engines too. It may be worth considering a tax deduction.
