I am thinking of upgrading to a new Tiffen motorhome. Got an offer of 27% off new Phaeton or Bus motorhome. Then they made an offer of $118,000 for my 2008 Monaco Knight. Monaco has every option and has 18,000 miles.

$118,000 seems way to low. What do you think?

Initial price presentation did not give specific numbers for MH and for trade. Just a net difference. I don't like this type of offer, seems to hide specifics. I mailed back and asked for a specific price for MH and one for trade. Got the trade number and I calculated the MH price.

Even disregarding your trade, it's a cool deal to me.....with times tough these days, 27% off is only luke warm....in 06 I got 30% off sticker without a trade..and that was 'the good ol days'

Did you call around to multiple Tiffin dealers for a bid on what you want? I think you could do a little better, but in todays topsy turvy RV market, I really don't know. I agree that the $118K for yours is low, but with a trade, don't expect much more from any dealer. I do know that the last week of October, a dealer in Tucson was offering 09 & 10 Monaco product coaches from the old MMC company for 46% off MSRP, without a factory warranty, but with the Prizm 1 year wrap around warranty. This included the top of the line models. They were also offering decent money on late model trades.

When I trade all I care about is the difference. What he gives for mine what he charges for his makes no difference. If I do not like the difference price I walk. I also tell them I want the "out the door price" no funny adders for paper work, PDI or what ever. Just give me the MSO and I will pay TTL when I register it. Based on your post you do not know what is being called MSRP. All you know is 118,000 and 27%.

I'm a car dealer, the only number you shoud be concerned with,is the difference price,as long as you know that number, they can wiggle the numbers around anyway they want, and not confuse you,now the dealer also has to sell your trade and pay interest on his floorplan loan, until your old unit sells,he is entitled to make some profit,it's a fair trade for the sevice he provides, and he has to pay his employees, and their healthcare among other things,in this economy he's probably giving you a pretty good deal, just to weather this economic storm,it's your money, and i just wanted to show you a view from the other side,27% is a lot of money, especially with a trade in,just remember the trade difference number,it has kept me from overpaying more than once,,frank

Nada low retail was 136,000. If wholesale is 80% of that; you are looking at 108,800....Deal seems reasonable to me...Maybe you can squeeze them for a few thousand more.

It is a given that the dealer is going to sell you the new unit and expect to make a profit. It is also a given that the dealer is going to normally give you the current wholesale value for your trade which theoretically allows him to eventually sell it for a profit.

The current acceptable price for the new unit is easily determined by contacting several Tiffin dealers and asking for a price to purchase the same unit. In a like manner, contact several of the many dealers who constantly advertise to buy used motor homes and ask what they will purchase your unit for, today.

When you have taken those two steps, you subtract the trade value from the purchase value and have the reasonable price you should pay in difference. Any other price someone on here is going to come up with is really not relevant. Reading enough posts on here will convince you that you should get a 40% discount on the new unit and retail for your trade. Something that is not going to happen.

Too many shoppers don't do their home work and are then at the mercy of the sales reps manipulation of the numbers. Something they are forced into because the shopper really doesn't have a clue to reality. It is really not rocket science work and an informed buyer will always do better than the emotional buyer.

I think when you shop around, you will not find other dealers offering more for your trade....They all use the same data to determine trade allowances and offers will not vary very much.

I think you are right Steve. Dealer Wholesale is approximately .778186 (this is an average of 20 vehicles I have researched) of the Average Retail. In your case the wholesale should be somewhere around $127,903. Ask the dealership to see the 2009 NADA Recreation Vehicle Appraisal Guide. If the dealer refuses go to your local library and look it up.

Another factor - Tiffin currently has a backlog of 400 orders, and finding a new model for sale is very difficult. Plus, you're trading an "orphan" (albiet a nice one) which the dealer needs to sell "at a good price" to move off the lot - for a model he can probably sell easily. Of course, there's probably a little more to save by negotiating, but I wouldn't expect the Tiffin to be around for long.
