Our E4OD transmission started to slip between 2nd & 3rd while shifting. Decided to pull it and have it rebuilt. MH has 38,000 mile on it, so this isn't saying much for Ford's E4OD model Tranny. Started pricing rebuilds in the Central PA area. I was adamant about the parts I wanted installed during the rebuild. I wanted Borg Warner Heavy Duty Clutches, a Transgo Shift Kit, everything heavy duty. Wanted a new Triple Billet Torque Converter, the works.
Prices here in PA were HIGH. I found a shop on ebay that rebuilds in FL. Checked them out with their BBB. Seemed reputable. I pulled the tranny (I have a shop and do my own work), the rebuilder arranged freight pickup and shipped it out. Got it back in less than 10 days. Hired a guy to help me install it. On the first trip, within 30 miles the tranny slam banged while shifting. Called the rebuilder, they wanted it back, pulled it the 2nd time, shipped it and it was returned. Hired the guy to help install, again. Next trip, same thing. Slam bang shifting. Called rebuilder, pulled tranny again, shipped again. Same thing happened a THIRD time. I have pulled the tranny on the MH 4 times in 2010.
After the 4th installation of the so called rebuilt tranny, we took a short trip of 40 miles. It seems to be working ok now.
I contacted the company and asked for the warranty periods to be adjusted. Initial warranty period was 1 year from 3/31/2010. I asked for 1 year from the last redo. Nope. Company claims I violated the warranty by installing it myself, and not having it done by a certify shop. I explained that I do my own work, have had a business for many years, and retired from the Army as a Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor. Nope, doesn't matter. I'm still in violation of their warranty.
Anyway, The name of the company is Pro Power Transmission located in Brooksville, FL. I recommend folks refrain from using their services.
I have less than 500 miles on that 'rebuilt' tranny. Not too good of a track record in my opinion.

Well that's the downside of DIY most of the time you know it is done right and you saved a few bucks but when you have to due it again the savings is no longer there.

We had problems with our Ford tranny and after 3 replacements, bought a Jasper Engine Works tranny and that ended our problems. I highly recommend JHasper Engine Works engines and transmissions.

It is very common for trans rebuild shops to void warranty if you install the trans yourself. While there may be some aspects of that, that make sense, I don't think a certified shop necessarily means they install it right either. Since I may be in your shoes soon, I've been shopping trans suppliers. Most void warranty unless you have a certified shop do the install. I may be inclined to video tape the whole install. Since a warranty can not be voided without proof that a modification caused the damage, I would think that could be applied to the whole install process. While one would hate to have to fight a warranty claim, it would be better than no warranty at all.

Jasper is the place to go for tranny's and engines. Reliable and reputable. Used them for years for a fleet when I had a real job. Never a problem.

The Rebuilder knew from the beginning I was going to do the work in my shop. Had he mentioned he wouldn't have warranted it, I would have had the job done locally. As for money, I did save a bunch. With freight both ways, the parts I wanted (supposedly) installed, the whole price was $1800. Local shops wanted $2000, and I supply the parts.
Bottom line is Ford's E4OD transmission's are junk.
Thanks for the input on this thread. It IS appreciated.

X's two on Brian's Truck Shop. They will bulletproof the E4OD. Do a search on them and read about them using the E4OD in drag racing.

I find it a little bit unusual that the OP has decided that all Ford E40D transmissions are crappy based on his vast fleetwide experience with just one particular unit. I happen to have one with more than twice his mileage that has never given the slightest hint of trouble. That makes it no more than 50/50...ya know? Sure, his experience is bad but Ford has produced a couple of million of this tranny. Many of us seem to make the thing work reliably. With mechanical things as complicated as this, being used under the extreme conditions found in RV service...I doubt that there is such a thing as "bulletproof."
