Plastic is not all bad inside the trans. Some of the glass filled plastic is stronger than some metals. Its lighter, which means less stress. If used properly, it can be a very good choice. It has nothing to do with price.

I see nothing wrong with a "plastic" bearing cage. The cage is simply an assembly tool.

The Rebuilder knew from the beginning I was going to do the work in my shop. Had he mentioned he wouldn't have warranted it, I would have had the job done locally. As for money, I did save a bunch. With freight both ways, the parts I wanted (supposedly) installed, the whole price was $1800. Local shops wanted $2000, and I supply the parts.

Bottom line is Ford's E4OD transmission's are junk.

Thanks for the input on this thread. It IS appreciated.

All that trouble, 3 installs, shipping, etc for $200.00 dollars?

My brother in law is friends with a guy who runs the largest transmission shop in Los Angeles. this is what he told him regarding the E4OD. The E4OD is basically a C6 with an overdrive grafted on. There we're constant problems related to the overdrive and numerous design changes up until 1995 when they finally got it right. He also said that he had never repaired a E40D that ran synthetic fluid.

"In the auto repair business we feel customers who do their own work are like people who want to repressent themselves in court without a lawyer... "

Regarding this remark, people don't buy cars to employ mechanics, plus you never know if you get a vehicle that the owner might be smarter than you are at what your doing. They just might not have the time or inclination to do it. Treating customers like their idiot's will put you out of business real fast.

From what was said about the chipped engines being hard on the trans. it sounds like another good reason to keep mine stock. I didn't want to go to all of the expense to chip and do the exhaust and then have a weaker system.

I'm pushing almost 400 rw hp on my 7.3 with the pm rods in it. This thing is beat on daily with the only thing I did to the trans is sonax valve and tri springs for a firmer quicker shift. This motor has been chiped at 15k miles and is just under 100k now.
