We will be travelling through New Mexico on I 40 going to Arizona in a few days. Our research has shown that NM is famous for green chili cheeseburgers so it is on our list of things we have to try.
Where can we find the best ones? Open to suggestions.

That's my favorite part of traveling in New Mexico. I don't care what you order, you get asked, "Red or Green?".

Just had a good one from Greenside Cafe in Cedar Creek (I-40 exit 175). Last weekend, we had another one at the Mine Shaft Tavern in Madrid (where the movie Wild Hogs was filmed). DW had the Green Chile Wrap and wouldn't even share it was so good! There are many great little artsy shops (judging from the time DW spent looking) in Madrid.

Here's your answer:

All of these were nominated in last year's contest (though I take the part about Blake's Lotaburger kind of lightly). Personally, I like those from Sugar's at Embudo or at the Buckhorn Tavern in San Antonio (NM).

I second the Buckhorn - but from I40 it is a few hours out of your way. Great New Mexican food is right off I40 at Mary and Tito's. But I'm not sure where you'd park a rig there.

Sheesh - I'm not much help ....

I just had one at the Elkhorn Cafe in Chama last week... it was magnificent. Or buy your own Hatch green chilies from the roadside stands that are roasted in front of you, and grill your own hamburgers. I love the food there.

The Red or Green is asking which color of Chile.....most if not all of the chile cheese burgers will be green. The red or green Question comes with other dishes, such as enchiladas or even chile rellenos. Green or Red & Ditto

Red or Green Chile Sauce

Finding Chile Cheese Burgers - I was not impressed by Lot o Burgers, myself.

Chile Rellenos

If in Las Cruces area NM Mexican food.

I am hardley ever on I-40 so can't help you up there. I can't see how a regular restruant in NM could survive without a Green Chile Cheesburger or green chile cheese fries on the menu. Blakes, Lota Burger and the other fast food burgers are ok but just don't seem the real deal to me, though I enjoy them for convience. In our small town we have at least a dozen Mexican food places and a couple of American food places. All have green chile cheesburgers. Nothing like a hand made patty, satued onions, real cheddar, jack or cheddar with japs. cheese sometimes all three types of cheese on a slightly toasted bun. Also good green chile cheese fries are great where they use fresh cut potatoes, not the frozen kind.
