Cowboy Camp Coffee:
Put one quart of creek water in a pan, bring it to a rolling boil, remove from heat. Toss in one or two handfuls of coffee grounds. Set the pan where it will stay hot but not boil.
when it achieves the consistency you like, pour and enjoy. Strain if you must.
Preferred consistencies:
Pits the plating on a silver spoon: close to perfect.
REMOVES the plating: almost there.
Pits a stainless steel spoon: pertnear. (do NOT put it in a tin cup!)
Permanently stains a Corelle cup: Just right!

I don't want my coffee to snap back first thing in the morning. We use a drip at home but while on the road a good old fashioned perc on the propane works just fine for us. One less thing to break.

I always preferred perked coffee for those times when electricity is not available or practical to use. It not only makes a good cup of coffee it also fills the RV with that early morning coffee aroma. I just use my regular drip filters with a hole poked in them for the basket stem and it works very well.

12 volt coffee maker is OK I guess if you want coffee around noon but they take WAY too long for me and a regular 120 volt pot uses way too much battery power for the minimal task of making coffee.

There are many options for coffee that do not require electricity, you can use a gas (propane) fire, a Gas (Coleman fuel) fire, or a camp fire.

1: Melitta (Spelling, the company that makes cone type filters) has a cup at a time coffee maker that is unique of all the ones I've seen. it is simply a filter holder (#2 cone) designed to fit atop a cup.. You pour water over it, Just below the boiling point (Take it off the fire, sit a few to let it cool a degree or 3 and then pour)

2: French Press

3: Old fashion (Coleman sells one) Perkolater.

And now for the "Best of both worlds" suggestion.

I use a Proctor Silex automatic drip coffee maker when I have the power to power it (not much) it's a single cup model

Like #1 above it uses #2 cone filters.

Without electricity I can just lift the lid and .. pour near boiling water as above.

i've had my Coleman stovetop drip coffemaker for over 10 years now and i've never had an issue with it.
works great!
sure it's not as fast as the plug-in kind but it gets the job done and makes fine coffee.

never had any "melting" issue. it's a great and durable product.

Look at the Bodum Santo's stove top coffee makers, $50.00 or so, and amazing coffee from a camp stove or RV propane stove. They've been around for over 50 years.

Pack 'em carefully, they're glass! But they are amazingly fun to watch brew a great pot of coffee!

Slate got this one right, when I was in Basic Submarine School I made coffee for the Chief's lounge once in a while and that's all they had, my Mom had a couple of those during the war (WW2) because metal perculators were not available, she didn't like it much because she like her coffee boiling when she poured it into the cup.

Melitta has several different sized drip makers from 1 up to 12 cups but once again glass for the 12 cup and plastic for the smaller ones.

I am the only one that drinks coffe at home and SIL doesn't camp with us often and then never drinks my coffee, perked or steeped. I use a SS perc. and Folgers Single Servings (coffee in a tea bag). Use two of the singles per cup and if I want to get gone early I try McDonalds if available, after all they have seniors coffee for us seniors.

I vote for a SS perculator or the tea bag type singles.

I find using a Melitta #2 cone filter drip thingy the fastest, least propane used, and easiest to clean up. I have a stove top perk that I use from time to time.

I just fire up the generator. Push two buttons (generator and coffemaker) and I have my coffee in 10 minutes.
