Update:
After a few days in Morgantown, WV, I headed over to my sister and family's house near York, PA. I left there to come home on the 23rd as planned and took the following route.
Little grey roads until 70 W. I wanted to avoid 495 and 695 at all costs. I was in my Jeep, but even leaving at 5:15 am was going to only put me in Fredericksburg, VA by 8:30 or so.
Followed 17 south and 29 south through VA/WV and Picked up 74 S in Greensboro. I then angled down toward 95 (which I picked up in SC). I took 95 the rest of the way home.
A few observations:
95 south of 26 in SC was an absolute mess. It is usually a bit congested through here, but this time was exceptionally bad. I hit that area around 4 p.m. I SHOULD have angled over to 301, but I called my wife and she said the traffic didn't look too bad south of me at the time and the 301 route would have added 56 miles. I chose just to risk 95...parking lot within the hour. I mean 4 mph and stop and go for hours. It finally let up around the FL line, but I have learned my lesson. I arrived in Ponte Vedra (home) at 9:30 p.m.
29 and all the other roads through VA etc. were great little roads and RV friendly. 2 and 4 lanes, good pavement condition, predictable stoppages, largely untraveled, and surrounded by beautiful countryside. There are battlefields dotted all through the region and sleepy little towns to stop and stretch your legs in. We will be taking "iRV" and the 3 dogs up to the Adirondacks this summer and plan to take this route again.
