I have my first big truck but haven't used the Tow/Haul swith on the column yet. When do I use it, under what conditions, and what should I expect?

If I had it on my truck, I would use it whenever I was towing my trailer. I would expect the engine to rev a bit higher before shifting, the shifts to be a bit firmer, and better performance on downhill engine braking. What does the owners manual say about it?

Use it full time when you are towing, especially for the size trailer you are towing. It will change the shift points in your transmission (among other things) and will keep your tranny cooler.

Tow-Haul mode, transmission also upshifts automatically as you slow down. Also, clutch remains locked at all times (no "free-wheeling").

I use it all the time while towing - unless I forget to push the button. The only time I have had issues is when I am near the bottom of a compression hill and ready to take off. When I push the accelerator the RPM's really climb for a while before it disengages. To counter that, I push the T/H button and push it again at the bottom of the hill.

You have a different transmission than I do but I think the tow/haul system is made basically the same. When towing I leave it in overdrive. Why not take advantage of the diesel's torque to save fuel? That's why I bought a diesel. After a down hill run and going up the other side the transmission won't shift soon enough to take advantage of the momentum and to keep revs up so I shift out at about 55mph instead of the 45 that it would computer shift. I also click into the T/H mode if I want to increase speed and it won't with more than 1/2 pedal. The industry designs their trucks so that little ol' ladies can drive them but if driven by "truck driver" they can preform a lot more efficiently... ... IMO..
On edit, As noted on down hill braking...

With your large trailer you probably want to leave it on under most circumstances. The tow/haul will engage engine braking. At times you may not want engine braking and would need to disengage the tow/haul feature. With the tow/haul button on engine braking can be initiated by giving the brake a press and release. This should force it to downshift. For more braking press and release the brake again and it should drop another gear for more engine braking. Give it some accelerator pedal and the engine braking will turn off. You can practice without the trailer. I use mine at times with no load to help slow down. It works extremely well once you get the hang of it.

Your owner's manual should fully explain this for you. You would be very wise to spend a few minutes reading it.
