I have used mine on a few occasions in hilly conditions and only when towing. I have a 2008 Ram 2500 CTD with a factory engine brake and a 1/2 T towable 5er and haven't had a situation yet where the engine really needed the extra help with the changing shift points. Perhaps when I hit the Rockies. I have an engine brake and find that sufficient for slowing coming down a hill. One time I had the tow/haul and the engine brake engaged and tapped on the brake. The truck downshifted and kind of lurched as the lower gear and engine brake kicked in at the same time. Kind of startled me and have since just used the engine brake and downshifted manually. At least I feel in control.
As far as the manual goes, mine is rather simplistic and doesn't explain what it will do in different situations.
My advise is to try it in different situations until you get comfortable with it and go from there.

I use the Tow/Haul whenever we are towing the trailer and sometimes when going down a hill when we are not towing. I have a friend with the same year Ford we have and he turns the Tow/Haul off when towing and he thinks he is on the flat. he is now having some problems with his truck not going into gear right when he puts it into drive. We are not having that problem. I wonder what the difference could be!!!

I seldom use tow/haul on flat level highway, but let mountains enter the equation and I cut it on.
I like the braking.
Example: I towed over the Mt.from Jackson Hole to Idaho Falls, and the downhill side of the Grand Tetons was long and steep enough that some guys burned their brakes up.
I was in Tow/Haul mode and came down the Mt. in 2nd gear.
I used my brake when I got a little faster than I wanted,
slowed down below what I wanted, and got off the brake.
No problem.
(I was glad I had a big strong Diesel on that mountain)

I use tow/haul mode almost all the time. Even without a trailer, the engine braking alone helps maintain speeds in heavy highway traffic.

"Tow/Haul"--Self explanatory. When you are towing, use "Tow/Haul" That is what my owners manual says and that was the answer I got from Ford when I asked them. Makes sense to me to use it when towing, because that is what is designed to do.
