We are a camping family. Always been since our youngest was born. We camp almost year round and this is the time of year we plan for next summer. My kids are ages 2, 10, 13 & 15. My oldest boy has decided camping is no longer "cool" and goes reluctantly. Long story short my wife no longer wants to camp due to the kids fighting. So the past year I have taken the middle age kids and camped with friends. Any idea how I can bring the family back together for some summer family fun? Last summer we camped at a great location and my oldest stayed in his tent playing X box or sleeping most of the trip. I hate that.

Teens, Wow what can I say. Not much you can do but hang on for the ride and hope there is no permanent damage. We have been down this road, It is not a good road but a road you must travel. We only had two kids so I feel for you. Some day you can be happy when your kids want to take there family camping so they can have fun like they remember having. That will put a smile on your face. Until then Good Luck

We have yet to run into that issue our kids are closer in age, 2,3,5,6. I really like to camp out in the middle of nowhere and my wife is fine with that most of the time but she does like going to other cities and walking around and seeing what the city has to offer. However we do try to mix it up everynow and again. A year ago we did a city trip, San Francisco, and this year we are going to do a more out in the middle of nowhere trip like Wyoming. Our kids really do not seem to care right now as they are fine hiking or going to a museum in the city.

But may be something to consider to mix the trips up a little and perhaps include a city that may have other things to do like museums or other city attractions.

Our daughter pretty much gave the camping scene at 12 years old. She would sleep over with a friend on the weekends we went camping. She really never was into it much. She thinks we are pretty goofy to still go camping when there are so many nice hotels available. Oh well.

"Wonderful wife & 4 Really Fun kids" You might want to rewrite this.

Been there...done that. Have you asked the teen what he would like to do? There seems to be a large age difference in the children. Maybe a father son fishing trip, canoeing, etc.

We always took their Mountain Bikes with...seemed like it added another layer of things to do. And fishing rods, horse shoes, croquet and a couple of 2 way radios. No TV during the day, no video games. And having a dog with to keep the kids busy, too.

I was never so happy when the son that was the first to not want to go bought a very old toaster TT so his kids could go camping. He had come full circle. Life as you know it is changing. can't be stopped but it can get better. There is no easy answer, Look back on you teen years, Hope it's not to scary.

Good suggestions. I am trying to include all in trip destination selections. We have done lots of father son trips. Last time I went out with my oldest we ran his X box through power converter while dry camping. Tapped both batteries in about two hours. He is a gamer. I am not. We did kayak together. Maybe I should change my signiture or risk false advertising. lol
