I have lived here in the coastal bend Texas Rockport area for twelve years on water front property across from an 80 unit rv park that is always filled with winter Texans. Late January and February each year the petty theft picks up and I have to be careful about keeping stuff locked up. Stuff stolen is not something that would support a druggie cashing in at a pawn shop. Last year even my 14$ anode from my new motor home was taken. This year already gas tanks and tackle boxes are missing from the dock.
There are a few obnoxious folks in the wintering Texans that seem to get the lay of the land and then before leaving start to take other peoples possessions. They do not do it for drugs or food, looks like just disrespect. Be aware as you approach the end of an extended seasonal stay that similar attitudes may exist in your area and keep the lockers locked.
The wife and rv north in the summertime in a more transit schedule and have never had a problem, We still keep stuff locked up

Not sure you are the only one having problems. It is happening all over the country. Years ago you could leave everything out in the open at camp sites and nobody would take it. Not so much any more.

Pops,
Has your local law enforcement agency been notified? How do you know it is the winter visitors? Anyone catch them? As a retired LEO who has worked some very bad neighborhoods and worked in their recovery, I can tell you that community involvement is the key to bringing down these types of problems.
Neighborhood Watch programs, having crime prevention specialist come out and complete a survey of your home and your neighbors to include the campground owners. Getting involved is the key to making it work.

Yes, this is happening all over the country, most likely due to the very bad economy and unemployment situation. As your post was directed at the winter texans in the Rockport area specifically, I would venture to say the snowbird areas of south Florida and Arizona also have this bad problem. I try to keep things out of sight and locked up for the sake of tempting someone. I tell DW that this is to keep the more honest of individuals at bay, as the stone cold thiefs will stop at nothing.

I guess what you are saying is all us Northerners have "Sticky fingers". Before you blame the visitors, look in your own backyard. It could be kids in your neighborhood trying to make a couple free dollars. Get your local law enforcement involved.

Ditto x2.
Wow, The OP feels the need to post about a personal theft AND then blame snowbirds for the crime rate in your OWN town

What the above statement means is that law enforcement doesn't have time for these because usually there is not much or any workable info to go on. You just have to keep your things locked up. I agree, probably kids. They know nothing will be done. I dislike the the people that buy this stolen stuff as much as the people that steal it. Retired LEO.

That is one really broad accusation, hope you have some proof. I go along with all the others who say to get your neighbors involved and your local law enforcement. Sorry for your loss.
