We did the whole BC, Yukon, and Alaska trip on our own and as others have posted we bumped into the same caravan several times and were able to exchange info for future contact with some of them. The advantage of going solo is you get to move or stay as you please not as a tour guide has preplanned. Many of those we talked to on the tour group had good things to say about it. I guess it comes down to what you and your bank account are comforable with. Either way have a great trip.

We have traveled the Alcan Hwy up and back 5 times solo. The caravans travel the same roads and stay in the same campgrounds. You can Google the activies in any area you wish to stop and again will see the folks from the caravans there also. The wagonmaster is not any smarter than you. Save your money, travel solo. The caravan option is like doubling your fuel cost. I don't even know if the Milepost is even a wise choice any more. Much of the "current" info is outdated. We did not use it on our trips. Ask questions on your fuel and food stops, you will get all the right answers of what is at your next stop and current road conditions. You will be waiting for a fuel stop listed in the Milepost as open, to find out it closed two years ago. Get the current info from the locals.
