What are some of the concerns and lessons learned about setting up residency? Present states taxes are way to high. Trying to find some background info from those who have gone down this road.
Thanks in advance!

Wyoming has pretty low taxes. Some people just don't like the cold weather. However if it is just an address and place to live in the summer it would be great.

When we went full time, we set up our residency in South Dakota. Terri at MyDakotaAddress.com was great to work with. Answered all of our questions, and basically led us by the hand thru the entire process.

Florida isn't bad to declare domicile in. No personal State income tax. St. Brendan's Isle in Green Cove Springs, FL is an excellent mail service.

I am with
http://www.americas-mailbox.com/
South Dakota has No State tax, 3% sales tax, No wheel tax in Penington county and No vehicle inspection. Talk to Don and let him know Ron sent you. (That way he will probably charge you double)

Was in South Dakota (Americas Mailbox) now in Florida. Use Passport America mail service which is very good. A few more dollars per year but I like the service better than Americas Mailbox. Maybe just me! They post all mail online so you can delete if you wish.
Sales tax is 3% more than SD if buying. No state income tax.
Plates on Motorhome 70 bucks compared to close to 300 elsewhere. Auto about 40. All registrations can be done through the mail including drivers lic.no need to return to state.
Don't have to travel up to the cold for jury duty (if you can't get out of it.)
If you happen to carry concealed weapons you are able to get a Florida License as a resident which has reciprocity in many states.
You probably pass through Florida once a year anyways compared to South Dakota which can be out of the way. Some things to think about.

When we began to fulltime we went with Escapees RV Club mail service and our residence then was Texas. Just before we bought a new rig we changed our "domicile" to South Dakota with Alternative Resources in Sioux Falls, SD. That way we paid 3% user tax on the RV in place of 6.5% in Texas.
It should be noted here that the regular sales tax in South Dakota is 6%. The state has a different rate on some things like RVs that is a "user tax". We actually lived in South Dakota during my working years.
1we didn't want to establish Florida residence because there was a tax on investment income. Texas and South Dakota do not have a state income tax.

Brian I happened to already live in a generally tax-friendly state, Texas. I would weigh all your options and desires costwise, then proceed in making a better choice than your VA.

Brian, I am assuming you intend to go full time and are not simply trying to dodge paying taxes in Va. With that in mind there are some steps you need to take to change your residency. Remember any investigation into your residency must begin with your INTENT. Therefore, the first thing you need to decide is which State you would like to be your RESIDENT State. The most popular are Texas, Montana, South Dakota and Florida. Each has it's good and bad qualities. We chose South Dakota for several reasons. No income tax, cheap vehicle licensing, no vehicle inspections, etc. The negative is if you're looking for supplemental Medicare coverage. A positive is they don't have spot beams for DirecTV so you get a discount if you're looking for local coverage. Anyway, once you've chosen which State you want to be your resident state, you have to contact a mail forwarding service. We use America's Mailbox in Box Elder, SD. Begin transferring all you information to that mailbox. This would be your vehicle registration, voter registration, VISA/MC bills and any other recurring bills. Transferring all your correspondence to the mailbox establishes your INTENT to make whichever state you chose, your residency state. Check also how long you MUST be out of VA to avoid the presumption of residency of that State....good luck...be sure to ask any other questions if they haven't been answered....Dennis
