A friend of mine is looking for someplace within about 20 miles or so of the Rockport/Aransas areas where they make their own jerky. Anyone know of any that I can direct him to? He's not interested in the commercially available, vacuum packaged, "store-bought" brands, just something locally made. He's also interested in jerky made of meats other than just beef. Can anyone here help him? I can't find anyplace. Thanks.

I assume that your friend is not an RVer or would have posted this himself. If your friend lives in a S&B, look into NESCO/American Harvester for making his own jerky. I know this is not what you asked but we have been making our own for about 15-20 years in a Mr. Coffee dehydrator. We try to preplan with the DGKs and make as much as four pounds at a time for trips. We like the original flavor and either Costco or Walmart beef. We like the texture and there seems to have been a change in the grind of most supermarket ground beef in the last two years. I try to use 92/7 mix.

DD uses ground turkey but I can't stand the taste, she also likes to flavor her own. Off to Costco this AM and may be able to make some soon, just don't use ground beef that has been frozen, it comes out dry and chalky.

Actually he is an RVer (winter Texan), but doesn't use RV.NET. In fact he doesn't use his computer much at all. When he first asked me if I knew of a source, I just assumed that they would be easy to find, but the only ones I found were WAY out of his way.......Victoria, Houston, Beaumont. I just have a hard time believing that there isn't someplace much closer to Rockport.

Chances are some of the VERY fine BBQ places in the area may have some or know where to find some.

Also check local meat markets in Rockport, AP, or Corpus Christi. Most of them have jerky.

Found one meat market in Rockport that has it, and found a woman who sells it from a trailer on the road shoulder on 188 at the intersection with the road to Bayside. Thanks for the suggestions.
