For the life of me I can't understand why someone would go EB over a 2500 CTD. The prices are very close. The mileage is close also. Towing mileage is actually much better. I think the CTD runs cleaner with DPF.

Very close on price?

F150 2wd supercrew XLT Ecoboost/auto MSRP 36,800
Ram 2500 2wd crewcab SLT Cummins/auto MSRP 42,300

Certainly both have their positives and negatives, which have been hashed and rehashed. But they both have strength when used for their intended purposes. If you do more than say 20% of your miles towing, you might be better off with the Ram. If you commute with your truck, and tow a trailer 6 times a year, you might prefer the Ecoboost.
The 2500 diesel also has lower payload capacity than the F150HD. The diesel makes the truck so heavy and the GVWR is not high enough to give a good payload capacity with the crew cab. The answer is to get the 3500SRW instead of the 2500, which provides 1000 lbs more payload capacity than the 2500.

After going over the work sheet again, I noticed the dealer was pricing the XL instead of XLT model. Also wondering how to decide whether to go with limited slip diff. or automatic diff. Can someone explain the difference and which one is best?
thanks

Ford doesn't offer an Automatic Diff. Your two options are a limited slip, or a selectable electric locker.

The Limited slip is pretty good for the majority of drivers, along with the electronic traction control, probably get you out of most sticky situations, and requires no input from the driver to function.

The selectable Electric locker actually locks both rear tires together when the button is pulled on the dash. It is not ideal for driving on any solid road surface, and is best used in extreme offroad situations.

I personally would get the selectable locker, but would advise most people I know to get the limited slip.
The standard open differential is available on all Ford pickups. The limited slip and electric locker are both options.

Another option is to buy the truck with the standard open differential and replace it with your choice of any aftermarket locker or limited slip. There are many choices available in the aftermarket and most are as good or better than the Ford factory optional differentials. I have a Lock Right automatic locker in my F350SRW that I have been very happy with for several years now.

Xlt has a full line up of towing and hauling packages available. It and the XL are the only trim levels that are available for the HD Payload option and when you order the HD Payload you automatically get the HD Towing. It is also available as an individual package.

Not true, My Lariat HD Payload/Max Tow is due to arrive in 2 weeks.

My truck was spec'd by the dealership owner for his lot, I didn't order it. He spec'd 6 trucks the same in different colors, and NONE of them were limited slip. Otherwise, these XLT trucks with the HD payload were very nicely equipt. When I asked why no limited slip given the list of other options, the salesman told me,
"Mr. _________ doesn't believe in limited slip rearends in tow vehicles".
Hmmmm, might be nice if the owner were buying the trucks for himself, but personally, I would like a limited slip in a truck meant to work. I have been in many situations where I wasn't "stuck" by any definition, but couldn't get traction with the standard open rear, and had to engage the 4WD system just to get moving. Very annoying!

My advice, especially if this is a 2WD vehicle, is DO NOT get the standard rear. Opt for either the limited slip, or the elec. locker. You won't be sorry.
