I am aware that most of the camping facilities in this area do not open until after a long holiday. I can't remember what the holiday is and when it would be GOOD TO GO? What date can I head Northeast and be pretty sure of finding places to camp? Thank you for your answers in advance. Gary

You're thinking about Victoria Day exactly one week before Memorial Day.

We visited Nova Scotia (northern portion and Cape Breton) 2nd week of June back in 2008. The tourist season hadn't really started yet. No problem getting a site each night without reservations. Weather was still cool. We had a great time.

May 19th 2012, our long weekend Victoria Day, is when just about all the campgrounds open. Will be cool, unless this winter continues as it is going, could be warmer then some southern States....lol.

In 2007 we took ferry across on May 28th to Port aux Basques. Never had a problem with campsites AND we saw tons of ice bergs. General rule of thumb is the earlier you go the more likely to see bergs.

Diann

P.S. I believe 2007 was a record years for icebergs; we saw them into July.

Diann,

Are you sure that date wasn't May 18. & you rushed north thinking the icebergs might melt.

IIRC the icebergs were still coming down in August.

Another thought, the ice report from Environment Canada: http://ice-glaces.ec.gc.ca/prods/GULF003/20111201000000_GULF003_0006157439.pdf

Summary: above normal temperatures. Or when the ice is cleared out the air in all of Atlantic Canada (NB, NS, PEI & NL) warms up too.

& I am not used to having Canada geese winter in waters not too far from where I live. This is tidal water bordering on Northumberland Strait between Nova Scotia, New Brunswick & PEI.

Little Kopit, I know the crossing date is right (I had checked my logs). I don't know when the bergs disappeared BUT the last one we saw was July 4th at Witless Bay. The remainder of July (until we crossed to NS on 27th) was spent in the interior and on the southern coast.
