Hi All,

Soon I will be replacing the ST tires on my 5th wheel with LT tires. The ST tires are 235/80/R16 Load Range E and the Max weight of the 5th wheel is just under 10K pounds. My question is: "Is there any advantage to using a 245/75/R16 or 235/85/R16?"

Thanks

Either are good. If you need the shorter 245's because of axle space, then get them. Otherwise 235's are great. Chris

Everyone seems to reference the LT235/85/R16's when they upgrade. In my case these tires will not fit due to the larger diameter versus tight axle spacing on my trailer. The LT245/75/R16's are very slightly smaller in diameter than the ST235/80/R16's that are presently installed. I have not evaluated possible issues with tire width.
Apart from dimensions I can't help with possible pros & cons. In either case you will want to be certain that the load rating meets or exceeds the axle rating on your rig. Apparently all 'E' tires do not have an identical load rating. (I'm acquiring a dangerous amount of knowledge....)

Pick the one that closest matches original diameter.

If either size has no clearance issues I prefere the narrow 235/85 series tire as the 6.7" tread width closer matches the narrow 6.5" wide trailer wheels.

Many 245/75 series tires can have a 7.5 inch wide tread. High load carrying tires work best with the wheel as close as possible to the tires tread width unlike a high performance vehicle with lightweight tire loads.

Lots of 245/75 tires on std 6.5" trailer wheels so choose the size that works best under your wheel well.

I replaced the 235 80 16 chinabombs with 245 75 16 Transforce HT. I needed the diameter to be the same. Without a micrometer you won't be able to tell the difference in the width.

245/75-16's and 235/85-16's are about 1" different in diameter and about 1/2" different in width.

This means the 235/85's will be about 1" closer together between the axles and have about 1/2" tighter clearance to the tops of the wheel wells.

The 245's will have about 1/4" tighter clearance with the springs, insides of the wheel wells and outer edges of the wheel wells.

Load your trailer and measure your clearances to find out which tire would work best for you.

I put the LT245/75R16 BFG Commercial TA on mine. The diameter was what I desired. The approved rim width range differs between the two tires. For the 235 it is 6" to 7". For the 245 it is 6.5" to 8". If you have a 6.5" or 7" rim (I bought a 7" rim) you can use either one.

There is one member here that put 245s on and had to switch to the 235s. The problem was they had outboard mounted shock absorbers.
