my wife and I have just purchased a new 2012 jayco travel trailer. Weight of 7800 pds, can I get by with pulling this trailer with a chevy 1500 silverado as my wife and I are both teachers and will most likely be pulling it about 5-6 times a year in Michigan, i don't really want to get into a 2500.

Is that 7800 GVWR or some mystical number you got from some brochure?
What year, what motor, what rear end ratio?

yes the GVWR is 7800 and the truck I'm currently looking at is a 2012 silverado with a rear gear ration of 3.4 engine 5.3 v8 crew cab

Properly equipped the truck will do OK. However I would not suggest a 3.42 rear end for towing. That is fine for everyday grocery getters. But for serious work you really want the 3.73 rear end.
Do you plan to upgrade anytime in the next 5 years? If you answer yes, then why not skip over to a 2500HD and get the 6.0L gas motor.

The newer 6 speed auto works well with the 3.42 I've read. I'm sure owners of these trucks will chime in.

We have a 2011 Jayco 26 BH and pulled it our first year with a 2008 GMC Sierra crew cab Z71 5.3 with 3.73 rearend. While this truck pulled it ok it left me wanting a more capable vehicle. I never put full water in the trailer (90 gal cap) or left anything in the waste tanks while trailering. Last year we purchased a 2011 Silverado 2500HD crew cab 4x4 w/plow pkg, 6.0 with 3.73 rearend. What a difference. Chalk it up to the added cooling capacity, heavier frame, bigger brakes, 6 speed automatic, bigger engine or what have you, I'm definitely happier pulling the Jayco with the 2500HD. I now pull with full water ready to use. My only reason to upgrade in the future is we plan on going to a 5th wheel in the next few years and will switch to a 3500HD crew cab long bed diesel 4x4. There isn't much difference between the 1500 and 2500HD price wise. My average mileage with my Sierra was 17.3 over 35,900 miles. I saw as good as 23 on a trip empty and was around 8 towing the camper. The 2500HD averages 15-18 empty and 11-13 towing. I run premium, non-ethanol in the 2500HD and get 3-4 MPG better than ethanol blend.

Good luck on your purchase.

I'm betting if you like RVing you will be moving to a larger TT shortly with 4 girls. I'd just bite the bullet now and get the 2500 3/4 ton. In a year or so you will be trading the TT and truck for something larger instead of just the TT for something larger.

270wsmhunter ours is a 32' bunkhouse as well, could I get by for a few years on the 1500 with success if I am aware that I may limit the gas mileage and speed at which I travel....... the truck a 2012 silverado that I am looking into has a tow rating of 9500 and a rear ax of 3.42 I will never tow water or gray as I never have like to in the past with our 18' pop up before the triplets.... sorry for the questions but I continue to get the run around from dealership as I have been researching this issue for two months now.
