Gas is $2.88 in Denver area! Why 3.39 and higher in parts of Tennessee?

I'm planning to go round trip Chicago in April. I stopped traveling with a motorhome (or any Rv) years ago when gas stayed over $2gal. I'll be taking a small SUV that will cost me $1500 in gas for 2 weeks. If I took my motorhome, the cost would be $4000 for 2 weeks. I think RV days are over with, except for those with money to burn gas.

govt. taxes, cost-of-doing-business (overhead), prevailing wages in different areas, level of affluence in different areas, cost of transporting/delivery of fuel, the oil market is not one huge monolith, cuz they can, older fuel vs. newer fuel, other taxes the retail operator has to pay (property, business, yadda yadda yadda), competition from other retailers, labor unions, business regulations, the C-Store is doing really well and can subsidize (to a point) the cost of gas, the C-store isn't doing well and the retailer has to make it up somewhere to stay in business. take your pick. why is it a gallon of milk is not priced the same from store to store? we've got plenty of cows and they're not dangerous.

Here is what I have trouble with, we use diesel and the other day in Arizona we paid $4.09 in the morning and later the same day I paid $3.71. 35 cents difference the same day in the same state.
