As I understand it each State has it's own licence and so you need one for each State. They can't get along enough to make headway on a common licence for retire people wich is a shame. I like to fish as well but find it hard and expensive.

I've fished Idaho, Minn, Wisc., Colorado, Washington, Arizona...each requires a non resident license. Most cost around $50 for annual license...except Washington state where if you bought all the tags required was over $200...fishing, shell fish, etc. It's still cheaper than paying the fine for not having one.

Fishing regulations (inland freshwater at least) are a "State right". You need a license from every State in which you want to fish.

I have gotten licenses in CA, Ohio, Oregon, Idaho, Louisiana, South Dakota and Maryland. All are non resident except the three where we were residents. There is no federal license as far as I know.

Each State........separate fishing license
Some have reasonable non-resident annual fees....some are quite expensive.

Depends on how long you will be in a state and do any fishing.
I go to WY once a year for a month. Annual non-resident is $92 (+ $10.50 conservation stamp)...daily is $14.
I buy the annual and get as much fishing in as I can....walleye, cut-throat, rainbow and browns if lucky but more than my share of carp/suckers

Colorado annual non-resident is $56 (+$10 stamp) or $9/day

I have fished in AZ, NM, UT, MT, WY, KS, PA, NJ, GA, & FL that I can think of in the past couple of years. Some are more expensive than others; but compared to other recreation like golf, going to the movies, or going out to dinner even an annual license is a bargain. Many states have a 3,5,7 day or other short term licenses that are reasonable and a good option for a short term visitor. Some states do not require licenses on private property. I can't remember where, but at the state parks in one state, you did not need a license if you were staying in the campground. I have had some nice fishing experiences for bass and pan fish on ponds and small lakes at campgrounds. Some National Parks, like Yellowstone, require a permit; some require a state license and some like Glacier NP require no license at all.

Safe travels!

This is our first year of full timing. I had planned on fishing in Texas. Since we were only going to be here for three months and there were so many other things I wanted to do with my wife I passed up on the $68 yearly price for all waters. I will fish when we head back north.

It is a shame.
