For just the Toy Hauler I have a 18000 pound GVW. Most of the time I'm at about 16500 pounds for the camper so I think I now have enough truck to haul it, International HT530 turbo diesel with 10 speed standard...

I was reading on one of the other sections this morning in regards to a new Winnie Class C based on the Sprinter chassis with the 3L diesel.
What caught my eye when I linked with their website was the weight capacity of this thing. The GVWR is 11,030 and the GCWR is 15,250 (copied off website). If this little 3L is capable of taking care of 11k and 15k weight with that little 3L diesel what kind of weights would our North American diesels be rated for if they were put into the same units especially the GCWR. In theory you should almost be able to tow a second unit behind you of the same weight. I guess my question really is are we moving to some different weight/tow ratings in the future based on some smaller engines like the above and the Ecoboosts of this world coming out. As long as your tow vehicle is capable of the weight load and stopping it we can put small engines and still be able to tow the 15k fifth wheel down the road and not need a 6l or more size diesel to pull it along. What do you guys think? I would love a 3/4 ton truck that I could drive everyday to work and get good gas and still be able to pull a 10k+ trailer or fifth on the weekend. I know we are close with the f150 but I am speaking more of the 3/4 to 1 ton trucks as they have done in the Winnie.

What you are describing is the trucks of the past.

My 93 Chevy 2500 has 200 horsepower and it gets right at 19 MPG on the hwy with 410 gears. Ford had the early Powerstroke and Dodge had the 12 valve with very similar ratings. The 12 valve got low to mid twenties depending on gearing.

My question is have you ever towed with an engine less than 200 HP and a load of more than 7K? My guess is you have not. I have many many times with my 93 and a friend had a 6.2 N/A diesel that put out around 160 HP. It was ok for me but for 95% of the public they would whine like a bad wheel bearing about those trucks.

On steep long hills I would be down to 27 to 30 MPH at WOT and max boost. Does that sound like fun to you? If so than maybe an older diesel or the 3 liter would fit the bill for you.

If gasoline is your gig then the Ecoboost sounds like it might fit the bill for you. It will get fair mileage when not towing and has good power when you need it. The problem is when you are WOT and are making full boost that little 3.5 liter now thinks it's around a 6.8 liter and will drink even more fuel than a 6.8 liter. In short, even that little 3.5 liter will drink a lot of fuel when your towing in the hills.

You want power? I can give it to you; almost any amount you want. You want fuel economy, I can give you that also. BUT you can't have both at the same time. The manufactures say pick one and I will give it to you. 95% of the public say they want power, despite what they say otherwise.

I to this date have not had a problem with stone damage. But your right to ask the question, and I must admit I will be looking to buy some new full cover fenders in the near future.
I just put the truck on the road last spring, It only has 75,000 miles on it. I put a new 30000 pound rv hitch on it and wired it up to pull the camper.
I wanted to do more to it but my son in-law left my daughter with 3 kids to go chase skirts. From that point my extra cash has been going to help my daughter and kids.

I work with a guy that has a 07 Winnebago Class C on a Sprinter chassis and he would probably pay you to take that POS off his hands. His first trip the engine died stranding him in Kentucky, ended up costing him over $3K to get down to Florida.

The front end was rebuilt last year with less then 25K miles on it. Keystone Auto Parts are replacing all of there Sprinters with one ton GM vans. When they first got the Sprinters they just loved them.

I asked some of the drivers how they liked them and all of the drivers hated them but the company loved them. Probably had something to do with Damn-Lire giving them away at cost to large fleets. UPS is running away for Sprinter also. So much for Sprinter being "the delivery van of choice for the professional delivery driver"

I know two people that had Sprinters. Note past tense: one almost went broke when his van spent one d ay in three out of service (he lemon lawed it & loves his E350), another dumped it (ate probably $10K) after a year of electrical nightmares, putting his 350,000+ mile Chevy G30 back in service (and telling his son to get his own car). Never again for both of them!

I really hate the HP torque wars also. The majority of my driving is not towing so if it was available I would choose a smaller diesel with lower HP/torque and better fuel milage. But the manufactures keep increasing the HP/torque becasue it sells.

Simple. Call these people up and tell them you want a de-rated and mileage tune.

My buddy derated his Volvo from 600 to 400 HP. His mileage went way up but he does not climb the hills so fast anymore.
