I cannot seem to get the nerve up to camp in a State Park. For some reason, security is an issue....is it a REAL issue? or have I been watching TOO MANY MOVIES????

You have been watching way to many movies. I mainly only stay in state parks when I'm in the USA and I have never had a single problem. I have stayed in Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon.
Rangers are always nice and helpful, park is as clean as I would expect it to be and I have only stayed in a handful of sites that were difficult to get in and out of.

Watching way too many movies.
We have stayed in state parks all along the western states and have never had a problem.
We just love the state parks as our provincial parks could take a lesson.

A little of both actually....just upgraded from a PU to a TT....a little less apprehensive with the TT but a definite NO-NO with the PU.

State and Federal parks and forests are great. Been camping in them for over 50 years and never had a problem. They may not have all of the extra things that the commerical facilities have but they do provide a more realistic camping experience.

I don't camp anywhere but state parks. Perhaps you need to change states!

Where were you camping before?
Private camp grounds are no more safe than any place else......maybe even less safe. Private CG's don't necessarily have any patrols/security etc.
Go and enjoy the State Parks/National Forest CGs/COE and private CG's
Remember movies are 'make believe'
Go camping....enjoy.

Unless someone has a REASON to be "after you" you've just been watching too many movies. No reason a state park wouldn't be every bit as safe as a National park, Federal campgrounds operated by any of the agencies or camping is disbursed areas. If you concerned about campgrounds you might try RV parks or RV resorts.
