hello all,

well I am in the beginning stages of building a kayak rack for my 93 ford extra cab pickup. I live in Ca. I am going to call the CHP to see if I can do it. My plan is to come up from the front of my bed and go over my cab and hood even with my front bumper and the two bars come up from just in front of my bumper will slide into a bigger pipe and held with pins same with the back that way it can all be disassembled and leaned up a against the wall. I have thought of my turning radius of my 5th wheel. So what do you think ? I know there was a discussion last fall on here about securing kayaks on end on the back of the trailer and I am not comfortable with that option. I used to be an over the road trucker and I like to watch my load. I have to go to the metal shop and see what type of metal to use. I have thought of using threaded gas pipe with fittings..... that might not look to good. Well LET SAY YOU......Thank for the input and 2 or 3 cents worth. Karl

Karl,
I have a 16' touring kayak and use rollers on a crossbar in the middle of the roof of my supercab and a T-bar/goalpost installed in a front hitch with saddles to support the kayak. The back of the kayak is even with the back of my cab and the front extends a bit beyond the T-bar/goalpost in front.

I thought of the small hitch in front too but I have 3 kayaks and thought the 2 supports would be better than the one in the middle.

Karl,

Sounds like it would work. Run a search for kayak rack on this site. Chris has posted some pictures of a kayak rack that he made for his truck/FW setupI would post the link if I could. Always something else to learn.

Good luck,

Richard

we did something similar for our canoe. Remember to but the pins in on front unit. we forgot, canoe and front pole got off!!!lifted quicker than we could say oh s..t went over truck slide down the length of 5th wheel and went airborne down the hwy in Maine. Pretty impressive. Only damage one smashed Maxxi vent and a little damage to canoe (new fiber glass patch fixed it) You can bet that the cotter pin(s)(we now have 2) are always checked now.
