Hi,

I have a V6 tacoma I have owned for some time, and have been quite happy with it. 40 - 50% of it's mileage is used for towing and the rest is used for in-town runs. (to the gym, kids to hockey,etc)

We tow a 19' hybrid and the tacoma does fine. You know its back there though, and especially on grades would love some more power.

I found a decent deal on a 2012 Tundra 5.7L, and the dealer will be throwing in Tonneau cover, bed liner and Brake controller. We have test drove and love the Tundra, but are not yet sold as we can "live" with the Taco.

There are some features we really like:
1. Apparantly a full size truck makes for "safer" towing..would like to hear opinions on this
2. More width makes tundra more comfortable for me. After 3 - 4 hours in the seat I get some leg cramps.
3. Much deeper truck bed..can carry much more stuff!!
4. More power for towing
5. Tow/Haul Mode!
6. Dual temperature controls!! The wife loves this..
7. Wondering how the towing MPG will be compared to the Taco?
8 MUCH larger mirrors..

Would like to get others opinions. Not sure if I am sticking with the Taco or not..

My 2007 5.7L Tundra does like gas but it's a great pickup. I pull a 30' TT with it and have never had a problem. For a small hybrid it will be overkill, which is another way of saying it will be more than adequate.

You've listed 8 good reasons to go with the Tundra.
I have a friend that tows a 28' Jayco. He had an earlier model Tundra with the 4.7L V-8. He traded for a 2009 5.7L Tundra. He says it's a night & day difference. You'll love towing with the 5.7 Tundra.

The Tundra is a nice truck, I love mine! You'll definetely feel more stable in the Tundra than the Taco, just due to the heavier truck. I get around 10 mpg towing a 5K lbs travel trailer on the highways around 65-70 mph. Plenty of power to pull too, I have never been at a loss for power with the weight I am pulling.

Same here, I went from the 4.7 first gen to second gen Tundra with the 5.7, night and day. Your change will be even more dramatic. Aside from having much more power, you would be going to a much bigger, heavier truck which makes a big difference all by itself. The Taco V6's really like loads in the 3,500 lb range to be comfortable. If you want to go bigger than that, you need a bigger truck. I tow about 6,500-6,800 lbs.

Just one note: Don't let the dealer put anything in for a controller other than a Tekonsha product. P3, or P2/Prodigy preferably. Most try and cheap out and use a time delay controller. They are cheaper for a reason. Tekonsha have a plug and play cable for your new truck as well. No rewiring needed.

I agree. I have Tekonsha P2/prodigy and it works great even with my smaller bumper pull two horse trailer on 2009 V6 Tacoma with tow package. I thought about buying a Tundra this year for towing my bigger trailers, but decided against it. The next generation Tundra is due in next couple of years, and I'd like a more future growth potential. I think for that purpose Tundra was not big enough for me. I have a F350 on order now. On the other hand, for the O.P., I think Tundra would be a better vehicle for his intended purposes listed. To O.P., if you are all set to buy a new 2012 Tundra, I would be very aggressive about getting a substatial discount. Their sales number has been lower than ever, there are many unsold units on the dealer lots (at least where I live), and they are due for new design soon like I said before.

I went the other way. Went from a 1996 V-10 Dodge to the 2007 Tundra 5.7. So it was like getting a smart car for the milage. As for power last trip with the TT was to Murlte Beach and it did great over the mountains even with the TT loaded down with our two bikes.

We love our Tundra. Have the backup camera, the tow mirrors with defrost and turn signals on them, TRD package...a lot of extras! Nice ride, would buy another one.

Sorry, I did not answer your mpg question; with the trailer in my sig, about 6500 lbs I get between 9 to 11 mpg, depends on the terrain, wind, etc.
